Surf magazine collection? Post here!

Postby Iron Lee » Thu Apr 04, 2013 2:13 pm

Just wondering if anyone besides me collects these? I am into any surf maganzines from the 70's 80's and 90's (mainly Surfer, Surfing and Transworld).
I'd post my collection, but they are in my home country and I am currently in Bali where I have none (and wow are they ever damn expensive here!! and there is nothing here for old ones either).
Anyway I know the internet is far better than any magazine, but if you collect these I thought it would be cool to see your collection here... :woot:

I have hundreds of old paper copies of surfing and VW magazines but now with digital magazines it is £7 a month for as much as I can read. Can't justify paper magazines anymore when I used to pay out around £30 a month for them. The demise of the paper magazine is imminent I fear :-(

The thing with digital magazines is that they don't have back issues available from the 80's and further back. Last time I checked, they didn't have anything, and I emailed Surfer about this as well and got no response.
Digital magazines kind of take the point out of magazines anyway, since you have the entire internet right there if you are on your laptop / phone, whatever. No need to pay for a digital magazine with tons of free content everywhere online.
I don't actually subcribe anymore to any paper surf magazines, just collect old ones from the 90's and back. You are right it is too much money.

I may have a stray magazine or two somewhere.... more books these days although years ago I was a subscriber. I will see if I can get a picture of what I have probably like 2 or 3 mags from recent times (last 5 years) LOL if I can find them. I find myself rather bored with modern surf mags maybe because there is so much internet stuff I read. Just about the only time I buy them is in the airport waiting for a plane. Why look at pics when there are videos? Live feed surf contests?
So what is worse.... dying or regretting it for the rest of my life? Obviously I chose not regretting it.

I should have been more specific with this topic, I do mean older magazines. Like pre 1990. Although there is allot of stuff online from the 80's/70's/60's, a magazine from that time is kind of a time capsule. It's literally from that era. It's cool to flip through and check out everything as it was back then. In particular I'm into the boards from those eras.
I get what you're saying though, the Internet kills magazines, but you can't (that I've ever found anyway) flip through a 1980 Surfer magazine online. I like video but I REALLY like photos; they capture a moment that you might notice in video but is often overlooked. It's just cool in a different way, you see the photos and if you see it in video, you can see how the guy is actually doing the stuff in the photos which are so good.

Here is a couple I have with me at home in Bali. I have far more going back to the late 70's at my home in Canada. These two though are the very first surf magazines I ever looked at. I was 15 and my cousin bought these. I studied them for hours while listening to the Surf Punks lol... I dreamed about surfing but being in Canada, I took up snowboarding instead for the next 15 years.

This seems like a dead topic, I may be one of the few rare collectors of magazines from the 60's/70's/80's. Anyway if anyone is interested in selling an entire collection or just one, leave a message here because I am buying!

I just stumbled across your post, and although it's a few years old now, I thought I'd see if you might be still interested in some vintage surf magazines. I have a collection of the following back issues that I'm looking to sell:

Surfer magazine: April-December 1987; Jan-March, July-August, December 1988; all issues from 1989, 1990, 1991; and Jan-April 1992.

Surfing magazine: Nov 1992, May 1985, Oct 1985, Dec 1985.

Also Nov 1988 Breakout magazine.

And you're right, each is like a little time capsule of those neon days!

PROVENANCE
Includes a letter of authenticity re: letter to the editor from the owner of the magazines. Flagship surf magazine published monthly out of San Juan Capistrano, California, founded in 1960 by surfer-artist-filmmaker John Severson; the longest continuously published surf magazine, and sometimes referred to as the "Bible of the sport." Severson was a high school teacher with two surf films to his credit when he began to write and design The Surfer, a 36-page, black-and-white, horizontally formatted marketing piece for Surf Fever, his third movie. He sold 5,000 copies, enough to convince him to produce The Surfer Quarterly in 1961. Often labeled as the first publication of its kind, Surfer was in fact preceded by at least two other short-lived surf magazines. Color pages were introduced in 1962, as Severson stepped up to a bimonthly publishing schedule (monthly issues were introduced in 1978), and the name was shortened to Surfer in 1964. Surfer was firmly established as the sport's leading voice by the mid-'60s, fending off challenges from a half-dozen other California-based surfing magazines, and serving as a template for a small but growing number of surf magazines around the world. For several years, the magazine's tone and layout were fairly conservative, with a features mix consisting almost entirely of travel articles, contest reporting, surf spot profiles, big-wave pictorials, and surfer interviews. Severson was pictured in a "meet the staff" page wearing a coat and tie, and the magazine often railed against gremmies and hodads and others who didn't adhere to the surf industry's rigid "clean-up-the-sport" dictums. Severson hired knowledgeable surf writers (including Bill Cleary, Craig Lockwood, and Fred Van Dyke), top photographers (Ron Church, Ron Stoner), and first-rate graphic designers (John Van Hamersveld, Mike Salisbury). Surfer produced the best comedy of any '60s-era surf magazine, with Rick Griffin's Murphy cartoon series, and the fictitious rants of JJ Moon, self-appointed "number-one surfer in the world." John Witzig's 1967 essay, "We're Tops Now," proclaiming Australian surfing superiority over the Americans, went on to become the sport's single best-known article. Surfer's biggest transformation came in 1968, after Severson hired Drew Kampion to not only edit the magazine but make it relevant to the times. Kampion, an outspoken 24-year-old Buffalo-born journalist, took Surfer deep into the counterculture for three years, with anticontest articles, drug references, environmental features, oblique fiction pieces, and free-verse poetry. Severson sold Surfer in 1972 to For Better Living Inc., and handed over publishing duties to editor-writer Steve Pezman, who remained with the magazine for two decades. (Pezman would later found the San Clemente–based Surfer's Journal.) -- courtesy Matt Warshaw's Encyclopedia of Surfing

Hi, I just joined here looking for a certain Surfer Magazine from mid 60's that my boyfriend submitted a cartoon to and they actually printed it! He lost his copy and I would just love to replace it for him. If you are still monitoring this post please respond! Thank you so much!

I’m interested in which issues you have. Looking for anything vol1-9 for Surfer and also Surfing World from start to 1985.

I’m archiving these magazines to preserve them. See my work here: https://www.instagram.com/oldsurfmagazines/
