Any Surfers in the Navy? How does it work out?

Postby RichD14 » Wed Oct 10, 2012 4:39 am

I've been seriously considering joining lately. Does time out to sea seem to kill you surf life? Can you bring a board with you if you get deployed for 6 months? I know it's rediculous but I'm not really trying to ask the recruiter. I've already been through college and realized the corporate business world is never going to work for me.

Which Navy? Surfers from all over on board.
I've taken up troll hunting just for fun, instead of a rifle I'll just use a pun! 冲浪爷爷

Today I had exactly the same question in my mind- I want to join the Royal British Navy after university as a Medical Officer- and I was wondering if I'd ever have any time to surf..

el_timmo has been a member for a long time, although he's not been around lately. He's in the Navy, perhaps you should drop him a pm about this thread.

RichD14,
assuming you are talking about the US Navy, then get assigned to:

- Naval Surface Warfare Center Port Hueneme near Oxnard, CA (they actually hold an annual surf contest in which competitors are enlisted and civilian)
- Naval Air Station Point Mugu near Ventura, CA and Oxnard, CA
- Naval Weapons Station in Seal Beach, CA
- Naval Base San Diego in San Diego, CA
- Naval Base Point Loma Naval Base, Point San Diego, CA
- Naval Base Coronado in San Diego, CA
- Naval Air Station North Island, San Diego, CA
- Marine Corps Base Hawaii (MCBH), at Kaneohe Bay, HI
- Naval Computer and Telecommunications Area Master Station Pacific, in Wahiawa, HI
- Pacific Missile Range Facility (Barking Sands), in Kekaha, HI
- NB Pearl Harbor near Honolulu, HI
- Naval Security Group Activity (NSGA) Kunia, near Honolulu, HI

You'll be able to get some surf time at these locations. There are also bases in Guam and Japan. I'm not as familiar with them, but there is surf there, too.
