I've surfed at night twice and it was very fun. It is quite a bit different then surfing at the day time and everything seems eerie. Definitely give it a go if you take proper safety precautions (waves aren't to big, have a buddy surfing with you, etc).

Not really. Just try not to surf when there's no moon

I did feel like I was going to get eaten by something most of the time I was out though...

I surfed late into the evening at Maroubra once. I was having a top session so didnt want to get out until the very last moment. And the very last moment was...
I took off on a left and was flying down the line of a nice straight face. Then I was wondering why it was all dark ahead of me - and as I squinted ahead trying to work out what was going on, why there seemed to be a big black hole in my vision, I slammed facefirst into a wall of water - the wave had met with some rebound off the shorey and there was a sudden bend in the wave face that I completely didnt see coming  :bang:

That sounds crazy as hell but it also seems like a cool experience despite the fact that you blew your face out on the face of a wave

I have not read the above, but I love night surfing as where I live the water glows when disturbed due to bio-luminescence. You can see a dim pot of light around your feet while you sit on your board, then the feathering top of the wave becomes almost luminously apparent as it rolls toward you ! - Awesome!
