Hey. i was wondering what would be my dimensions cause I'm a big dude. i weigh about 240 and I'm 6 foot and 4 inches and I don't know what kind of board I should get. I was thinking about a hybrid but my older brother keeps telling my to get a shortboard. I already know the fundamentals of surfing so I'm looking for at getting a custom made board for myself i just need to know what are my dimensions.

Morning Chazzhulett0512, INTERESTING the first thing I'd ask you is, does your brother surf
Now about your dimensions, you are a big Dude! So you need a BIG board, a short board if you have a major read of what is on site is a possibility but in your case remote possibility. You also seem like you think you know the fundamentals but once you get on a board in the water it all changes and you find out what you really know.
I'm gla you are not even considering soft boards as a learning option. I'd look at a good basic longboard at least 9ft and with good volume, go custom if you like but a good suggestion for beginners is to get an off the rack quality brand. It seems you have the cash so you can go that way.
Custom is great but custom is where the surfer knows his stuff and knows what he wants in a board both shape and performance, which is why I suggest an off the racker.

I haven't given you more about dimensions yet as you don't say whether you are fit, where you plan to surf and other than a statement of I know the fundamentals

Can you learn on a shortboard? Maybe, but more than likely you'll get frustrated and give it up before you learn (which might be a good thing, more waves for me). At 240lbs you should start on a longboard, a big thick one, then more down as you get better.

Still not sure? Go rent one!!!! Easiest way to find out if you'r size is what you need.

It would really depend on what you mean by this statement

If you are an intermediate surfer able to pop up and go down the line on a longboard, a hybrid, funboard,or minmal, should be your next step. If you are riding a 10' longboard now, maybe scale down to a 9' longboard. It is better to take smaller steps than to just go from a longboard to a high performance shortboard. The other reason your question is difficult, is that skill has a lot to do with the answer to your question, and we do not know your exact skill level. A super experienced surfer at your weight will be able to ride a much smaller board than an intermediate surfer. I hope that helps you. The best thing you can do is rent or borrow different sized surfboards to help you get your dimentions dialed in.
