Uk winter expectations

Postby phillwilson » Wed Dec 17, 2008 2:39 pm

Hey, just a quick one...

This is my first year of surfing here in the North of England and one thing I kept hearing form surfers and shop owners while I was trying out board etc was "yer this summer sucks...can't wait for winter"

Now in my mind this had winter as either epic or at least consistently surfable

however above a small rise in the number of reasonable weekends with "some" surf I can't say I have noticed a HUGE change (certainly at the cost of darker evenings Im getting out less)

so my question to you who have seen winters come and go is...

Is this how it normally is?
is this year any better/worse in terms of surfable days?
is it likely to get better between now and spring?
what does spring hold for us in the north UK?

I only moved to the east coast last September, so been here for a year (though i went on ship from march to august so missed the summerish so not really a year). I though it would be consistent as i heard a lot of good things about it although have noticed its pretty poor consistency wise compared to wales and we probably get about 5 good days a month and the other surfable days are average, though rarely good swell for a long time.

not sure about how it normally is,
last year seemed better to me, i can remember a good November and December last year,
when i came back up from home (south wales) after Christmas it was ok for about a month and then we had about a month flat spell in February before i went on ship.

all i can say is, the atlantic brings in far more consistent swell although when the east coast is good its really fun (although you can say that about any country that gets waves)

but don't quote me on the months as i can't remember exactly but its something like that.

i used to surf the east coast more in the past. the last few winters have been a bit pants compared with the south west and south wales. however the last few summers have been pretty epic compared to the south west and south wales. which is something i bully my mates from down there about coz im home at summer.
