Improving your surfing in and out of the water.

Hi guys!
I would want to know what is your opinion on the best ways to improve your surfing in and out of the water?

By out of the water i mean Non-surfing days.
I try to surf as often as possible but since i work from 9 to 7, and usually the sun sets at 5 PM, that means getting up at 5:30 am on weekdays. So when i´m feeling too lazy to wake up that early i usually just jog 30 min- 1 hour I then do some pushups, pullups, squats etc.

I would rather bike than jog on those days but:
1) Bikes are expensive 2) You need sunlight and a couple of hours to bike. So plenty of days i wouldnt be able to bike and if i did had the time to bike i´ll much rather spent it surfing.

Im afraid that Jogging in the long run is going to mess my back and knees.
Would you recomend sticking to it or just do the squats, pushups, etc.?
Would joining a gym be a wise choice ? And if so what kind of excercises would improve my surfing? (Im thinking cardio, multijoint excercises, olympic lifts, etc)

Now, I have this other question:
I recently switched from a 7´0 slimmed down hybrid to a 6´3 x 18 5/8 X 2 5/16 Flyer 2.

On the 6´3 i can catch waves with ease, standing up is "No Problemo", but once im on the face of the wave my rides consist on just trying to keep on going as long as possible. I tend to take much more fun lines than on the longer board, going up and down the faces every now and then, and the wipeouts i have been experiencing have been partly because i catch much more steep and hollow waves on this board.
I want to be able to do botom turns, cutbacks, carves and flow on the face of the wave with ease. I feel that if i keep on going with the 6´3 board i´ll be able to do so in the future, but a guy here told me that eventhough i can surf on the shorter board the longer board would make me improve faster.

From my experience with both boards I think that they handle too diferently for this to be true.

I want to know what you guys think it would be the faster way for me to improve my surfing?. Thanks!

as far as excersise goes well.... surfing is my only excersise

But in regards to doing manevours. Its sometimes hard to try things ehn you are catching long rides as you dont want to spoil the ride. So what i did and still do when im learning something new is to try the manovour at the very end of the section just before it closes out or phases out. That way you get a good ride but also get to try some things out

Im not a pro but what helps out of the water in things i want to learn is surfing in my mind and watching surfers who can do what i want to do.

I then evaluate how themovements in the legs etc are done and do it with my fingers for a while.
I can do this for hours with my fingers and my other hand as the wave.

When i was a kid i used lego men as the surfer and carpet as the wave, barrelling over legomans head.

Anyway the knees bending and whatnot are similar to your fingers so if you mind surf aswell as use your hands to visualise in slow motion you improve your surfing.

Another thing i dont do but di as a kid a few times...
It might sound like trying too hard or being weird but it could be that Kids improve quickly becaause many practice their style and movements in front of a mirror or in the bedroom on their bed.
This could help greatly compared to an adult who is at work a lot and too busy to visualise surfing.

You should try swimming, since you never know when that trusty leash of yours may break. As for maneuvers, I am still trying to figure them out, but my tip is imagining it. Once I got a basic mental set up in my head of how I'm going to do it; it seems easier.
