£3k One Way....ideas please?

Postby phillwilson » Wed Nov 12, 2008 11:24 am

Hi this follows on to the endless summer post.

I am 28 live in the uk and have travelled once before in my teens for a year in asia.

I am now getting the call of the road again, mainly because my job is begining to bore me and I can think of more resons to go then stay.

basically what I would like to know is realistically, where can I go and how long do you think I can stay there?

Im not looking to copy anyone elses dreams, i just want a melting pot of ideas that may be enough hope to keep me going through winter here when the days are cold and the evenings are dark!!

BTW It doesn't have to all be surf related, just cool spots in the world

so far my list of possibilities include

1. Interrailing from Lonon to St Petersburg in Russia passing through some of Europe.

2.Going to Japan for a bit (prolly wouldnt be abgle to communicate enough to work there)

3. Going somewhere like Oz or NZ and trying to pick up work for a longer stay.

Im determined that this is going ot be more then a procrastiation sooo...cmon ideas?? plleeease!!

Okay, a bit of info to get your @rse in gear

If you want to work in Oz, you can get a one year working holiday visa but only up to the age of 30.

So if you wanna do Oz (you do), then do it now! :D

you have to be under 30 to get the WHV for NZ but you have another 12 months before you have to start using it, so you could probably manage a couple of years in oz and nz if you work. There's loads of seasonal work in nz.

On the one yr working holiday visa for Australia, you cannot have the same job for more than 6 months. I met a Englishman who had a proper job in IT for the full 12 months and then tried to extend his visa for purely holiday reasons.

His visa extension was declined and he had to leave.

But do come and visit. The weather is nicer and the food is much better.

How long were you thinking of travelling?

If you mean proper south, like Vic and Tas, then yes you'll need a wettie even in summer. If you mean NSW/Sydney, then no you wont. 3mm in winter (and the water is still pretty warm, but the air temp means you need a wettie), 2mm shortie in spring, and boardshorts in summer :D 8)

And a lot of sunscreen.

Yeah, there's plenty of surf shops

I wouldnt plan on doing a lap though - Australia is stunningly... er... "big".
You can fly for about seven hours, all over land, and still be in Australia
And a lot of it is basically empty. And has no roads. This comes as a bit of a shock to us Poms, who are used to a town every two minutes and a petrol garage with a Tesco's every five miles. You dont really comprehend just how much travelling there is to do.
You'd probably be better off doing the east coast (Vic to Qld), and then flying around to any other bits you want to see. The east coast, done in a camper van and stopping off for a surf, will still take a month or three. And even then, you'll run out of road and civilisation before you run out of Oz

Cheers, Yeah when I say a "lap" im actually gonna start in Sydney and work my way up to Cairns, the fly to Perth and do the south west corner and then fly to Melbourne to do that area - Tasmania, Phillip Island etc. So it will sort of be a big lap! :D
