Surf Stronger DVD with Serena Brooke any good?

Postby jayarcarlos » Fri Sep 26, 2008 11:47 am

I wanted to do some surf related conditioning (out of the water) since I'm able to surf only weekends, so I purchased the Surf Stronger DVD workout. I watched through it and it seems to be intended for the beginner since the exercises are extremely easy, at least for me that is.

If I had known this I wouldn't have got it, but still, I need a good workout routine to keep fit for surfing, anyone suggest the Surf Stronger - Core Training with Serena Brooke DVD? Or is it of the same difficulty... Either that or something else. I'm afraid to use any more of my funds for another disappointment.

Thanks in advance.

Thanks for the warning.
I was planning on getting those Dvd´s.

Most of the workout dvd´s i have bought/seen over the years are mainly focused for sedentary people.

You can always lookout through diferent workouts plans on dvds and magazines and make out your own one.

In fact i have always made my own traininng programs for all the sports i have been involved mixing gym execises with body weight exercises and cardio.

Unfortunately for me at least i dont have the will to keep on pushhing myself and after a couple of weeks i start skipping days until i just grow tired of it. So for people like me the dvd motivation factor is what´s worth it, its cheaper than paying an instructor.

so my advice for you go an browse through several fitness mags and websites and cut and paste their excersises until you build a program you like. As you may know there aint a specific workout for each sport.
Mix strenght training with cardio. As you have seen for example in the dvd you bought those guys just added special twist to regular excercises to make them more surfing oriented.

Or another advoice i can give you is to get involved in a martial art... jiu jitsu, kick boxing, muay thai will give you a heck of a workout, you´ll develop a lot of musles needed for surfing, lots of cardio involved, plus its fun and youll have a screaming psycho motivating you.

This is just my .02 cents buddy i hope it helps out. Please keep us informed as what you have done or if you have found a nice training program.

I play Xbox 360

Popping up from the recliner for a beer between loading times really helps out on those quick take-offs.

Good advice brutha. Actually I guess I have been subconsciously getting ideas from websites and surf/fitness mags all this time; I thought the DVD would give me a more complete insight on surf fitness -- I was wrong. Since being involved in multiple sports over the years (volleyball, judo, jiu-jitsu) and swimming/running as part of my cardio workouts, I expected a rigorous training guide.

Anyone who knows a surf specific workout that would kick my ass, please tell, thanks all.

Tips for training

Postby SurfCoach » Thu Oct 09, 2008 3:43 am

The Surf Stronger workouts work well for all levels. Modify the exercises by:

(A) moving quicker
(B) using a heavier weight
(C) adding more reps
(D) taking less rest
Changing the above variables will always be a great way to progress any workout.

30 jump squats anyone? (with 8 pound dumbbells in each hand?)
You get the picture.

Good advice, maybe it would have been worth it with that kind of information provided in the DVD. It doesn't matter, I found some great circuit workouts specific to surfing online, they're killer and got really sore the next day -- the best part was that it was FREE!

My personal method of getting/remaining fit is to enter a run like the Great North, or a half marathon. I enter one or two races every year with a buddy, and we train together, thus keeping us both motivated. Having a mate take the piss cos you feel like being a lazy beer monster shouldn't be underestimated.

Following a training plan helps you to develop at a reasonable pace and to really appreciate the gains you make, week by week. Also, having forked out £40 or so to register for the run is also an incentive to be ready when the day of the run comes. Another good motivator is to raise money by getting people to sponsor you, the thought of letting people down always helps kick me into running when it's cold, wet and dark.

I also like to throw in different exercises, so some days I'll swim, others do some yoga or go to the gym and do some weights.

I've gone from totally unfit to running a half marathon under 2 hours by following a 16 week training plan. And yes, I do have a full time job, kids and a family life as well ;-)
