I'd say going commando in boardshorts is the most comfortable. Besides, when you get out you don't want to have to deal with wet soggy undies that won't dry!

I usually just plump for the classic Colt 3 Ring C0ck Ring Set. Helps point the way.

it's all personal preference really. i like wearing spandex under my boardies - i wear Elephant Surf Trunks (elephantsurf.com) that are made specifically for surfing, but i also know a lot of guys who just wear normal Under Armour spandex, and some guys who wear nothing. it seems like more and more my friends are wearing spandex of some sort, but definitely steer clear of boxers or anything cotton as some might suggest...although the 3 ring cock ring set is a fantastic idea.

Nothing, without mentioning brand names I actually found that a pair of non rash boardshorts lived up to their advertising over 20 days up to 3 surfs per day and not a squeak out of my nether regions. But since other have mentioned brand names try Hurley :D

I wear Hēlo undershorts. They are similar to underarmour, except they dry out superfast. Check them out at www.heloclothes.com

Is that an inference to fish net stockings. They worked for a former foreign minister of the Australian Government who wore them.
The current leader of the Federal opposition party in Australia would recommend budgie smugglers (red)

I think its all about what your comfortable in. I caught my first wave when I was 12 and since then I have felt like the point of board shorts is to be fast moving. I feel like an extra layer would slow me down a bit. If you aren't comfortable with that, I would throw on some boxers under your boardshorts .

Just personal preference, though!

If it is nippy I wear 1mm Wetsuit Shorts, if it is warm and I have a rash I wear Poly Fleece shorts.

Boxers or any briefs will hold too much water and create drag.
