To his credit, there are beginners who do catch head high and overhead waves in their first few months surfing. They may not be ripping those waves, but they are charging. Also, the groms usually do learn faster than us older folks. They definitely have more energy (and probably less fear). When I first started surfing I used to charge bigger waves...and get drilled a lot more. I even got barrelled (on my belly on a longboard) on a take off once back then..
