Avellanas is a nice alternative to the breaks in Tamarindo and is a number of different beach and reef breaks, the best of which break off the mouth of the river.
Works in all tides but is best at mid to high tide. It is quite a short ride but is fun and ideal for longboarders. Works up to 8ft
The beach is about 20 mins south of Tamarindo. 5 minutes from Playa Negra.
Stay in the main town of Tamarindo where there is plenty of accommodation. or Stay 5 minutes away in Playa Negra.
Accessible by road.
The Costa Rica Wave House can arrange lessons, tranportaton & accomodation. Avellanas Surf School is also located here.
There is a beachfront restaurant with cold beers-LOLA's. They have the best Ahi dish: the Hawaiian Poki. Sit and absorb the local costa rican surf culture. Canopy Zip tour, horseback riding, fishing, snorkeling, beachcombing, ATV rentals. Plenty of entertainment. It doesn't often go completely flat.
