Pipeline, Sunset Beach Enjoy Firing Weekend Of Pumping Surf!

After a relatively slow early season, Oahu’s North Shore saw its first proper NW swell of the season this past weekend. Pipe worked its way through some warbles with sand on the reef offering up some solid barrels for locals and visitors, Sunset Beach saw epic conditions for the the Hawaiian Islands Sunset Pro, lesser-known nooks and crannies fired — Pinballs even decided to play a game or two Sunday evening. And there’s way more where that came from -- the North Pacific is just getting started. All of which you can enjoy from the safety of our cam rewinds above. Stay tuned for that.

Surfline’s Director of Forecasting Kevin Wallis explains: “The long period northwest swell came from an intense storm that flared up at the end of October. This storm pulled away from Hawaii – moving north-northeast from the Dateline into the Gulf of Alaska during the first day or two of November. Had the storm moved toward Hawaii we’d be talking about XXL Jaws and Oahu Outer Reefs – with the less favorable track we saw a still quite solid, but not massive swell.

“While producing swell from the northwest direction the storm was near hurricane force and kicked up seas to 40 feet (and once it moved east of Hawaii into the Gulf of Alaska it manufactured seas just shy of 50 feet, although those were aimed almost entirely at the US West Coast). Moderate, almost due east tradewinds groomed the swell as it filled in.”
