Monday, May 27 wasn’t just hectic at Margaret River. Around the same time as a small crew was tackling very large Main Break, photographer Scott Bauer got a call from mates Simon Tein and Tom Godden. “We’re going to tow Cow Reef,” they told him. “I was quite busy running around in the morning, but I thought whooo, that will be at the higher end of do-able,” says Scott. By the time he got there, the pair were already back at the launch ramp, having been shaken up by a couple of wild moments themselves. “They said it was really big, up to maybe 30 feet. They’d just come in to change boards, and while we were talking a got a call from a couple of other mates who were down at The Right.”
Word was the fabled yet super sketchy slab was free from the forecast onshore. “Simon and Tom just said, ‘Let’s go! Jump in!’” Scott abandoned an afternoon of work and spent it shooting his buddies from a drone instead. “I didn’t get to shoot the whole day,” he admits. “There’s waves in the morning that I missed. But I got the light, which was really nice. There were waves with the XL factor but they were few and far between really. It wasn’t massive but it was a good day to take it on for the first time.”
