South-eastern Australia was mobbed by swell this weekend. Look one way and there’s a black nor’easter! Look the other and there’s this thing — a heavy long range SSW pulse pushing up toward Tasmania and NZ and hitting Shipstern Bluff on the way through. The Shipstern session was “so busy!” says the renowned lensperson Stu Gibson. “But all good vibes. Lots of paddlers.”
This is really just the beginning for Shippies and for most of the continent’s south-facing coasts. A series of strong storms should flare well south of the Great Australian Bight over the next week to 10 days, pushing up toward the southern Tasman at times. Classic autumn conditions. “There are more swells on the horizon,” says Stu’s fellow ace photographer Andrew Chisholm. “It’s that time of year!”
