Much of the California just enjoyed a days-long run of clean, fun west swell, light winds, and a bunch of sunshine. Surfers up and down the state are still smiling, to be honest, and the lil Cam Rewind Road Trip above illustrates why.
We had Orange County based forecaster Matt Kibby explain what happened at the end of January. Turns out a large, complex area of low pressure over the North Pacific was the fuel for this particular fire. And even better: “The individual storms moving through the larger system took favorable tracks through the middle latitudes of the North Pacific,” Kibby said. “This made for very westerly swell for California from a great direction to get similar size into a lot of places.” (Nooks and crannies rule!)
Oh, and remember we said warm? Also true! Kibby confirmed why: “Strengthening high pressure over the West Coast kept those storms from trashing local conditions,” he said. “It also produced unseasonably warm weather and long windows of good wind statewide.”
And while run is over now, all that rain currently lashing the state will inevitably do some interesting things with sand movement. When things clean up -- and February looks pretty active -- could be worth checking that spot you’ve had your eye on.
