Wave Of The Day: Kelly Slater, Backdoor, January 26

In a couple weeks, Kelly Slater will turn 50 years old. For those in need of the Cliff’s Notes to the 11-time World Champion’s unsurmountable legacy, Slater spent a large chunk of his teens getting acquainted with the North Shore’s most famous, and deadliest, tuberiding arena, Backdoor and Pipeline. He spent his 20s, his 30s — and to some degree, his 40s — doing incredible things, posting perfect 10s, and racking up titles there, whether they came via the Pipe Masters (1992, 1994-96, 1999, 2008, 2013) or the Backdoor Shootout (1996) or the Volcom Pipe Pro (2014, 2016). Now the Champ’s about to turn 50, which means he’s as familiarized with big, bad Banzai as any human can be. Clearly.
