Surfer: Damon Harvey
Filmer: Simon "Shagga" Saffigna
You’ll remember Damon Harvey. Part of the original Coolie Kids Seven in the late 1990s, compadre of Joel Parkinson, Mick Fanning, Dean Morrison and the rest of those Snapper delinquents. While his buddies upended surfing, Damon was always the cooler head, cruising off the back of that crazy show. He had a few great years, including an epic ride at the newly christened Superbank back in 2001, when he cracked the Goldie’s impossible dream — a wave from Snapper to the end at Kirra.
Now he’s a hard-working father of five, trying to fit surfing in to a busy grind. “It’s hard to get out these days,” Damon told us. “I’m just happy (this swell) happened on a Sunday, otherwise I wouldn’t have got out at all. I woke up early and drove past Kirra, saw it was good, but Snapper was really good. I jumped in there and surfed for a few hours. I’m in the worst shape of my life! Around lunch I thought, just hop out and have a break, then maybe you’ll be ready to go again, but when I jumped in at Snapper that second time, I just got blown down the line, couldn’t beat the rip. I ended up at Kirra.
“I got three waves. The first decent one, I flicked off and Parko was there with his ski. I asked for a ride, and he was like ‘Argh, I just wanna surf!’ So I said, ‘Tell you what, I’ll have a break and shuttle you.’ I did that for a bit and had a rest. Then I got that good one.”
Yeah, it was a good one.
