The Canary Islands, off the coast of North Africa, have long acted as the Hawaii for European surfers. Lots of similarities: tons of slabs breaking over shallow lava reef, way out in the middle of the ocean — and no shortage of local chargers. 21-year-old Luis Diaz above, is one such charger. He started surfing here at eight, and is on it whenever this fickle and protected spot lights up.
“I surf this wave a lot, it’s on the island I grew up on,” he says. “We have very powerful reefbreaks at home. And this wasn’t really a special swell, just a solid swell from the right direction with mellow wind. This spot needs glassy conditions (no wind) or offshore and a solid northwest swell.”
