Plenty of East Coast surfers scored during Hurricane Humberto. Northeast slabs were charged, Puerto Rican reefbreaks pulled into, New Jersey barrels threaded. But the best clip we saw from the swell was visiting West Coast surfer Jacob Szekely at a sandbar on the Outer Banks that hasn’t been good in two years, but decided to turn on for a day and resemble a Mainland Mexico beach break.
“At first, it just looked like huge closeouts, but we sent it anyway,” he said. “It took me like 45 minutes to make it out, and I watched Kevin pack a bomb, then after like an hour of packing closeouts, I lucked into that gem of a left double-up. It kinda just came straight to me, and Shulzy yelled ‘go!’ That thing was perfect. That was the best tube I’ve ever got on the East Coast and the barrel was huge. I was straight standing in that thing.”
