A solid dose of Indian Ocean swell saw the mythical wave at Padang Padang roar to life on Friday morning, July 21, 2017. Powerful 5-foot sets stormed across the reef every 15 to 20 minutes, but contest directors and the invited surfers agreed that the waves were neither big enough nor consistent enough to hold the 2017 Rip Curl Cup.
With most of the international invited surfers not making it to Bali for this “red light swell,” a crew of Indonesian surfers in this year's Rip Curl Cup, including 2014 Champion Garut Widiarta, Pepen Hendrik, Raditya Rondi and Defending Champion Mega Semadhi, paddled out for an afternoon Expression Session and proved that they will once again be a force to be reckoned with in the main event in 2017.
