Mediocre surf at Lowers is usually not enough to keep surfers out of the water. Especially on a Sunday afternoon.
But on Sunday afternoon, a very large whale carcass washed up onto the cobblestones, which cleared the lineup pretty quick. Some have reported it had bite marks. And yes, it’s widely believed whale carcasses attract sharks.
The State Park Superintendents will meet Monday to determine the best way to dispose of the carcass, according to State Park’s Brian Staudendaur. “We’re talking to heavy equipment operators now, and we can either pull it up off the beach or tow it out to sea,” he said. “We want to remove it as quickly and safely as possible.”
