How Good Are You At Surfing?

In all of the sports I have played, I can say that surfing is the hardest. But, also the funnest!

ye i know surfings about the fun and not how good you are but its a right pain in the backside when i go out in the middle of winter and end up catching like 3 waves in 2hours

too hard to rate how goo you are by yourself coz u might think ur surfing really well but ur not really. ive been surfing about 4/5 years ish? and im ok but no more than ok. best to ask someone whos seen me surf really.

I bought my first board just over a year ago, I still cant surf. I havent been able to go as much as I would like but was still anticpating being a better than I am now. Annoyed about it? - hell yeah........until I get in the water and start having fun again
Best surfer is the one having the most fun and all that so dont compare youselves to others too much.

I surf bmth too, well havent been there in ages cos I dare not go near the peak and cause havoc on a good day and hate the windblown chop/shorebreak/dump with a passion. I guess those conditions do help you out as the guys have already said but it's just put me off ever surfing there in all honesty, maybe that'll change after a good session there.

In learning any activity you will go through peaks and troughs so dont worry about it too much. You may well be progressing without realising it. I wasnt until 'essex sucks' pointed out to me "you have made loads of progress, I remember when you were too scared to paddle outback" (cheers mate) that I realised that I had done OK

Windy waves tend to have more power and there's always that element of suprise....oh yeah, and less crowded too.

I also mainly surf on the south coast and it will be pretty diificult to progress. Luckily I have the oppurtunities to travel abroad during holidays to surf but even after 7 years I'm still pretty average.

im doing ok.i used to surf years ago and got quite good.this time round i started in feb and have beenin maybee 20 times this year. have good days and bad,sometimes it comes together,sometimes it doesnt....guess i just need more time in the water

I go to Boscombe too, flat for months then large lumps of mush. Went in on wed am, had to as i have`nt been in for some time. Nearly killed me.

I've been surfing since August (but not for the last month ) and I think I've progressed quite well. I can get on my feet easily, do some turns, catch unbroken waves and occasionally manage to surf along the wave (only pulled it off a few times!). I'm not very good on big days though.

But like someone else said, it's hard to rate yourself as you might think your doing ok but you might actually be crap

Er, its certainly not a secret spot... buts its not one of the famous spots either, so a little discretion on my part - its Sydney, central coast.

I started in August of 2006. Had a rough go at it till June 2007 when I bought a board that suited the conditions for the US east coast. I never started out in white water. I figured I may as well go for it. Untill my new board I never road more than 2 waves in a session. The key is I went a lot and was so stoked when I did ride a wave. In that period of time I did start getting some turns in and could basically stay near the critical part of the wave.

Then I got my new board and the first time out in minimal conditions I rode 5 waves in a short amount of time. Now I don't even keep track of how many I catch after 3 waves. That's my goal every time I go out is to at least ride 3 waves. I liked my vaves about waist high then in October I was out in solid chest high waves and absolutely had the best time. So I progress

So if your a surfer and know what to look at to judge a surfers ability you would probably see me and say he is not a good surfer but if you saw me in August 2006 you wuold have said "He is not a surfer".

im considering going to australia and live there for a year, doing nothing but surf. Ive only windsurfed before. im from norway, 20 years now, so there not great surfing here. anyways, how good would i become after a year? would i handle 2 m tall waves or something (just neede som scale).

I've been surfing for 22yrs and feel like I've never really fulfilled my surfing potential. I spend at least half my surfing time trying to get back to where I was, before making progress again - and this has been more of a problem the older I get due to work/relationship/house DIY responsibilities. If only I could live my current life but with my old life attitude towards surfing - I used to be out of work living with parents and surfing was everything!

I always feel that if I spent even 4 weeks surfing somewhere good and consistent I will surge ahead and my mind boggles at living in Hawaii or Oz or similar. Don't get me wrong I'm happy enough with life in general not to move but when I do sit and think... .

Anyway back to the question. When I'm on form I can surf ok. I can do big turns both ways in big or small waves(mainly small tho), I can get air but never landed, I can get right round a carving 360(always going for them) but never surfed away from one, I have tried and failed reverses but don't go for many at all, I've got barrelled quite a bit whenever its on, and generating speed is never a problem.
