Badass surfer? You'd be a great whitewater kayaker

Postby yakkersurfer » Thu Nov 29, 2007 8:02 am

I know, you probably don't like kayakers, but I thought I would put this out there since whitewater kayaking has replaced surfing as my obsession now that I live away from the ocean.
The most important skill in whitewater kayaking is staying calm and functioning while upside down/swimming in rapids. Since most people can't handle this, not many people can become good kayakers. If you are a good surfer you most likely could progress very quickly and be able to run hard whitewater.
Although standing up surfing a big wave is probably the greatest rush I have ever found, paddling off a 30 ft waterfall is pretty exhilarating. Kayaking gives me levels of adventure, camaraderie and danger much greater than I find while surfing.
Anyway, I'm not affiliated with the kayak industry, I just think that it is unfortunate that more people are not taking advantage of our rivers. Surfing is the ideal sport to step into kayaking. If you want more information the following forums would be the place to start:

cant you post on one of the many websites you listed above?

i once had a lovely spider shortie, one day out on the first wave i caught tearing down the line some goat-boating gaylord dropped straight in on me and broke the nose and put a sizeable crack in the rail. from then on i i cant stand any pr/ick in a kayak out in the line-up

there all :yearght:

gaylord
... " CheeZees word of the week !!

" Gaylord...is a little used homophobic insult these days, as it was undoubtedly over-used throughout the early-mid 80's. To call a guy Gaylord was to imply not only that he was possibly playing for the other side but had the motions and style of a person playing for the other side.
The insulted was not only gay but was on a higher level of gayness .. " a Gaylord " ...

For further explanation ..please see my best selling hardback... " Insults for Beginners and Intermediate users "

Kayakers always seem to have realy ugly girlfriends, usually ginger with blotchy skin.

I was fishng last night, standing in the middle of a beautiful braided river, snow capped mountains in the distance, a wicked sunset, lovely still evening, not a care in the world, complete peace and quiet, and everything was spot on, gently casting a fly to the nose of a big cruising trout, when all of a sudden, two c***s in kayaks came around the corner, and headed straight for me - they could have gone down the other side quite easily. They spooked the fish. So as they went past, I nailed one of them in the back of the head with my fly

Broke the line off, but it would have hurt like hell when he had to pull it out.

tell you something funny/ironic seeing as kayaking is the subject, was out on my kayak this morning and well basically there is a bung at the back of the kayak where you let any water out at the end of your session, today i forgot to screw that back in... so had paddled a fair way out feeling all smug in my nice shiny kayak down the beach to a nice bit where theres no rocks so safe to catch some waves and play around, however i noticed i was sweating more than usuall getting there and was wondering to myself why paddling was so hard today?! thought to myself have i just got really unfit in the past week? Nope that wasnt the case... looked around at the back of the kayak and it was submurged... it really was one of those times you say to yourself 'oh you fu*kin* d*ck head' moments, i struggle in to the shore with literally moments to spare and ripped the spray deck off jumped out and saw the kayak was pretty much filled up! i fliped it over with a help of a wave to get the water out, so blo~ody close to having a titantic situation on my hands... so i went home knowing that i was a PRI/CK in a Kayak and just got out the body board and strolled back to the beach humbled by the fact that i should stick to surfing...

im all for welcoming new people, actually i dont mind the "ive been surfing for 6 mintues on a foamie and the guy in the surf shop recommends and 6'2 shortie cuz i used to wakeboard A LOT" sorta threads but a thread where some goat-boater is trying to convert everyone to the wonderful(not) sport of running people over with kayak?

that doesnt float my boat-pardon the pun

kayak surfers are fine as long as they know how to control their boat. i got into kayaking when i came to uni. (joined the club because they were doing a pub crawl in on the first saturday) although i havent been surf kayaking yet ive been surfing with them quite a few times. its pretty useful actually because if you sit in the middle of a group of kayakers in the line up there wont be any surfers for miles around meaning more waves. white water kayaking is awesome. as is polo

What a boring site that would be if all we were allowed to do was post exclusively about surfing here!

Could a moderator please go through the history of this site and remove all the posts relating to snowboarding, skiing, mountain biking, climbing, bmxing, skateboarding, football blah blah blah.

Do you get run over by many kayakers when you're surfing in mountain rivers?

my posts were in relation to surf kayakers who have no control over a goat boat in surf over shoulder-high

did i mention anything about mountain rivers? did you even read my post?
