i have had dreads for around 5 years. Its great i never go to a hairdresser nor do i wash my hair ever (before you go yuk blah blah my hair is actually very clean). I dont need to brush or prep my hair in the morning i just wake up and go. Its the lazy mans hair do other than being bald that is.

If you get them you might want to wait untill a flat spell as you cant surf with them until they have some form and arnt all fluffy otherwise you will just ruin the dreading process.

You do realise you can wash your dreads... And should from time-to-time?

But don't use shampoo or conditioner. Just a resdue free shampoo soap bar. I think you can get them from knotty boy. But they are easy to make and you can normally get them at any health food store.

Ya i know but the girl who did my dreads said that if you never ever wash your hair it automatically cleans itself. Sounded odd so i tried it and it worked. havnt washed my hair in 5 years no reason to start now :-) anyways i think getting my hair wet everyday in salt water pretty much takes care of it lol

Yeah, as long as it's getting wet regularly it'll tend to stay clean.

There's plenty of massive debates about wash vs dont-wash in the online dread forums :D

The dont wash method works fine the only thing is that dreads tend to trap particles and dirt pretty well so clean water / salt water helps remove that so i suppose that could be argued as washing your hair

Yeah, dreads are cool in my opinion. I'm not sure that white guys always pull 'em off though, I'm pretty certain I wouldn't.

But, aye, pulling cuts looks great if you have dreads, hair swingin everywhere!

Nah, white guys have every right to wear dreads afterall you wouldnt tell a black person they couldnt have their hair straighted would you! I know loads of non african people with dreads who look really cool. One of them reminds me of "Predator" when he surfs! Its not to do with skin colour but more to do with personality and where your at as a person whether you can carry something like this off or look like someone who is trying too hard!

Do I have them? Nope, but when I were younger I had hair most of the way down to my waist for years. Just my choice.

BTW, sea water is great, you really dont need to wash your hair with shampoo too often if you surf as it seems to do it for you! But if you have dreads and dont surf you should definately wash it! Especially if you live in the city what with traffic fumes etc. - try blowing your nose and take a look!
