when you can turn and ride the line good i found the natural progression are cutbacks not too tricky to do.

Good deep bottom turn and hit the lip! Try and get as vert as you can...

when you say "tricks" do you mean basic maneuvers such as cutbacks, floaters, re-entries, top turns...or are you talking about doing airs and 360s? Taj Burrow's Book of Hot Surfing has excellent explanations and pictures on how to do basic maneuvers and tricks.

I feel that one of the most important things to get down before any other maneuvers is how to generate speed quickly ( frontside as well as backside) and in control going down the line. Only then can you do other manuevers well like cutbacks and smashing the lip, etc. I've only been surfing for almost 4 months and at least that's what i've been working on as of late. Also been trying to get my backside as good as my front. Still feels akward to me pumping for speed backside.

When you do this, make sure you plant your back foot at the top of the wave. It will make you stick and turn. If you dont, you'll just blow through the lip, wich leeds to a whole different trick :D .
