Phil - why the rolleyes to my reply??

The guy, by his own admission, is overweight and unfit and can hardly swim - so why is me suggesting that surfing might not be a good starting point cause for a rolleyes??

Surely my suggestion to at least start by trying something else is sensible, not to mention safe??

Or should we just encourage people to put themselves, and those that would perhaps be called to rescue them, in danger??

There's already enough people in the water who are a liability to themselves and others (on that point - godsgr4ce - get a leash and wear it - like DBBB says, it's for the safety of others! Your reply is bordering on idiotic, saying that leashes are some sort of noobie only device!! Selfish attitudes like yours really annoy me, as that's how and why people get hurt!)

OK - back to the subject ........ No-one is saying that this guy should NEVER surf - just that the sensible approach would be to first make sure he's less likely to kill himself whilst doing it.......either through drowning or an MI .......

i know what its like haveing a board coming towards me because some dick has not put a leash on. they are there for a very good resson so use it, if not and u are in the water with me and your board comes at me don't expert me too be nice

Throatpoker: learnign to surf should be safe enough. just stay in the whitewater and try not t o go deeper than you can stand up. make sure you can surf at a beach where there are lifeguards. if you swim and train at the same time as learning in the whitewater when you are good enough to get waves out back then you should be fit enough.

wear a fecking leash!!! either that or show me a video of you holding onto your board after wiping out in double overhead. id love to see it especially if you ride a longbaord. as for an excuse not to kick out properly its much more conveinient to kick out and get hold of your board leash or no leash. i read somewhere its illegal to surf in france without a leash. theyre there for a VERY good reason. endager your life all you want but dont fleshin' with other peoples by not wearing a leash.

Hopefully a local will 'show you the error of your ways' before you hurt anyone.............or better still you'll hurt yourself so you can't go in the water.........

just get out there and try surfing with a mate, in turn you're fitness will improve greatly, and over time you will end up 'out the back' once you get the suss of surfing, and most probably absolutely love it!!!

Thats fair enough as long as you arent putting any one else in danger. This is a touchy subject for some as if you are like me youve taken a board in the face by some gimboy who wasnt leashing it on close out town

I have to laugh when some idots paddle out at the reefs here not leashing it - its a long paddle back to find your board in pieces even in 1-2ft mush. Lessons learned always leash it.

Having had a friend badly injured by a kook on a shortboard and having seen numerous near misses, if I see anyone acting like a prat, dropping in, just being generally idiotic or especially not wearing a leash, I kind of see my arse as I know what the consequences can end up looking like .......

I think you have to have seen the effect to realise just what a board is capable of - even in tiny waves!!

I surfed without a leash in Cornwall this year.

Things about leashes is that any tosser can let his board go and swim under a wave and eventually get out back. The letting go of the board is as dangerous as anything else.

A guy i surf with was knocked unconcious by a dickhead not being able to duck dive so just let go of his board. Result unconcious what was an up and riding surfer, a week in hospital, and no front teeth.

Only reason i surfed leashless was cos there was only me and one other on a peak in weak waist high surf.
