N. Yorkshire coast this weekend

I may be able to get up to Scarborough/Cayton Bay either Friday or perhaps Sunday/Monday, however the forecast is promising fairly strong winds..For those of you with more experience is Cayton Bay sheltered enough? Still pretty new to surfing and the A1surf.com forecast for the East Coast has got me thinking. Thanks!

I'm off over Friday night, saturday and sunday!
Looks beeter than it has done for a while, all being well South Bay may be working.
Cayton's just been plane weird recently, not enjoyed it there, if it's too big you can even try Filey.

Hey guys,

I go to Cayton quite a lot and was wondering what the best time, tide wise was to go. I travel quite along way and its a real bummer when I get it wrong. I *think* mid - high tide seem best but I'm not sure.

I've never surfed at North or South bay are they better than Cayton? can you park for free?

Hi Warren,

If you check out the following link there is a review of the 3 main breaks at Cayton Bay.
I learned to surf there (self taught), but that is where I used to surf all the time. Personally now in that area I prefer South Bay on the right conditions, however Cayton can change so much. Had some great rides in the main bay, and bunkers. My mate likes the point, a bit less forgiving! Watch out for the low tide super dump! Always looks o.k from the top, when you get down there just one wall of shorey breaking boards and bones! I've had a couple of fun airdrops onto dry sand there!
If North Swell is around I'm sure he can tell you in greater detail about Cayton, but on it's day you can have a number of options there, (plus the showers are always welcoming) lol!

Cayton is really a mid to high tide break workinng best on N/NE swells, both bunkers and the point work best at this stage of the tide. Pumphouse gets working at low tide on an E or SE swell, and will also break over a boulder reef on big N swells.

North Bay works on most swells rights break off the sea defences, and i like the middle peak at low that breaks over submerged rocks. Rocks are an issue to the left of the cafe as you look out to sea.

South Bay a nice mellow learner bay alwasy 2-3ft smaller than the other two. Can be good on E swells, and a good option in big storm swells like this one and protected from NW winds.

If its too busy at S Bay check out Filey which is also protected from NW winds.

Not quite as classic as it could have been. Fri 8+ on the beaches and way way overhead on the reefs and exposed spots but pretty much maxed out, sheltered spots only at 4-5ft and i was busy.

Sat lighter winds but points and shelter only, and i missed it.

Sunday 2-3ft in shelter odd 4 footer cleanish to start went rubbish and i surfed like a fool.

Ah well more to come, its the start of the winter.

Trev think i saw your car at Cayton when we checked the point, Sunday< early doors.

Think there may have been a few dissapointed SW surfers up too, saw a few branded vans on south bay

a mate of mine from down here surfed runswick n said it was double head on saturday. i was near harrogate in a whitewater race with the canoe club.

It was double overhead up here, absoloutley MASSIVE, so beautiful and totally deserted, i didnt go out.....not really mini-mal conditions

I went out at tynemouth on saturday, first time out since may! (shameful isn't it?!) It was pretty fun but too choppy inshore and with a really short period. Occasionally calmed enough to get out, but not so easy if like me you'd hired your gear and got a 7ft foamy!

quite a lot of people out, not many out back!

really noticed how much endurance i've lost since being back in the UK though. Back to aus within 6 months i hope, well ready to get back into it.

Yeah I was there Fri night Sat and Sun, although Sunday was gash.

I was in at South Bay on Saturday morning and Evening. Thought it was ace on Saturday morning, bit 'steeper' than I realised when i got out back eventually! Got one great ride but nearly followed through on the airdrop I JUST made lol!

Problem was so windy Sun night, turned bang onshore. I see someone was rescued on Friday!
