size shortboard for experience

Postby Huntingtonsurf80 » Sat Nov 03, 2007 4:35 pm

Not saying I have tons of experience, but for the experience surfer, what is the ideal dimensions of a shortboard ( lenght, width, thickness) for an individuals height and weight? I am 5'8'' and weigh about 145 pounds. My girlfriend is getting me a surfboard this christmas, and I want a small to medium wave surfboard. I was thinking about either the ci flyer, or a zippi fish which I'm leaning towards.

6'0 x 18 1/4 x 2 1/4 for a standard shortboard. those are my "magic" board dimensions, although i weigh less. my husband rides the same dimensions or sometimes a 5'11" w/ same thickness & width. he's same ht & wt as you.

depends entirely on you adn your ability really. im 5'10 and about 135 lb and my small-medium wave shortboard is 5'11 x about 18" x 2". hard work but i love it. personally you might need one a bit thicker but not much longer than that as youre not that tall maybe 6'1 x 18 1/2 x 2 3/8. try a few boards out that you know the dimentions and see what you want.

Why not got to a local shaper you will get something far more catered to the waves you surf and your own experience pluss future experience. At least that way you wont be second guessing yourself :-)

Zippi Fish! I am dying for one of those. Custom Zippi from the man himself. Fishes are usually thicker and wider, easier to paddle on and more buoyant, but still good to rip on.

I bought an Al Merrick Flyer and sold it a month or two later. Maybe it was just a lemon, but have had much better luck with local shapers Kerry and Wade Tokoro.
