One word - timing !

The question went through my mind as I was paddling out in a solid 6ft swell - after getting totally taken out afew times I realised that its all about hanging around in the small wave white water area inside, waiting for a break in the sets - when that comes you paddle like mad and go for it. The worst area is a just broken wave, so basically avoid the impact zone. Up to about 4ft of white water is not really a problem as you can stamp on the tail and get the nose of the board over the white water, 5ft plus you need to avoid it.

I've seen a few people doing it.

Apart from the obvious difference of riding a huge board, and being able to catch waves easily, what's so good about it?

I'm not trying to start an argument asking that, just having a hard time seeing the point of it when it comes to riding waves.

I could wax lyrical about why it is so good, but I suggest you try it and find out for yourself.

Just to be clear - I still surf, but now I am out on the water alot more, and surfing new breaks.
