Hey Fran,

if you want to stay at surf beaches, Cairns isn't a good place to start. I would start on the gold coast and drive to sydney, stopping along the way. There are literally hundreds of world class breaks to choose from and apart from the Goldy and Sydney, all have a country feel to them. My pick of the bunch would be Coffs Harbour, Byron Bay, Lennox Head, Angourie and Foster. Just grab a road map and pull into any beach to check it out, there is plenty of accomodation from camping grounds to hotels and its a great drive. Have fun!!
