When it comes to buying a new board or having one shaped there is an astounding range of choice out there. Shapes, sizes, rocker, makes, shapers etc etc etc

I find that mentally designing a board thats entirely wrong for me and the waves I surf, and then letting someone who knows what they're talking about correct me works a treat

you need to think about what you think you want. whether thats more volume for paddling in a bit easier or lots of rocker for late drops and such. its about your riding style and what kind of ride you want it to be. then make a decision about what shape and dimentions.

Talk to a shaper.

Give them an honest description of your ability and the types of waves you'll be riding and let them advise you on what you need.

Personally whenever im down the beach or out surfing i am allways checking out the other boards. Usually for artwork and styles as i allready have a good idea what type of board i intend to ride. But also if i see someone riding whose style impresses me in the surf then i'll go ask what type of board they're riding as this can give you an insight as to what type of boards work well at the breaks im surfing. Then armed with this infomation i go home and make one!
So i guess the answer is observation.
