trimming

How do you effectively trim down the wave for speed and avoid going past the curl where the power is? I tend to trim and end up slowing down and going over the top of wave.

if im on my longboard il do alittle bit of cross stepping to keep myself trimming nicely while im waiting for a nice section, but if im on my shortboard i tend not to trim, i tend to just pump down the line and if i go to far ahead ill stop pumping or cut back or something. i spent very little time not actualy moving on the face of the wave just trimming
