Rib Injury

Postby slowburn » Sun Sep 16, 2007 10:24 pm

Hey everyone, injured noob here. I've only gone surfing 6 times but caught the bug early and ended up injuring myself. It happened when I was in Tofino, I spent about 4 hours in the water (having way to much fun popping ibuprofen and drinking redbull) probably my first mistake at 39 years old. I was doubling over with pain and ended up going to the hospital where I was told I had a seperated rib/cartilage and would take about a week to recover. Well, because of my job I had to check in with our own doctors who after a couple of visits told me to just rest. WTF...give me something more pls...
I started getting better but still had minor acute pain on part of the rib cage but it was easily tolerable. I started running and swimming again (3 weeks later) the sports of which I alternate on a daily basis (keeps me from smoking). Well after doing a couple of hard runs on a treadmill during work and swimming slow with big paddles I started getting stabbing pains on the otherside, back and side (4 weeks later) when I curl or am stationary while stretching to grab something. This pain is actually worse and the doc at the clinic told me it is probably a back pull and has nothing to do with the initial injury. From reading online I'm getting that it probably does have to do with the original injury. Right now Im popping Ibuprofen for pain and trying to ice, no sports.

From what I gather, it is intercostal/pulled muscle between ribs

Does anyone have any thoughts on this, peace, Slowburn (Roly)

REST IT!!!! And if you need any medical advice, see a doctor, rather than trying to self-diagnose or get half-arsed opinions of random people off the internet!! (and that's from someone who can sort of give a medical opinion!!)

In any other situation I couldnt agree with you more, the fact is that I'm dealing with Military Doctors (not by choice). Im not one to jump on the band wagon and start bashing people but I've seen and had my share of misdiagnosis with them, bad stuff. Because I am military I dont have a family doctor and so walked into a clinic on a weekend. I think what I need to do is to rest for now like you say and see a sports doctor for a real good diagnosis and more importantly some good healing advice aside from "rest" such and nutritional advice, message? chiro? More than anything I'm fishing for some reassurance from someone with a very similar injury. thx for your thoughts, peace, Roly.
