Surfing south coast (uk)

Postby Johnny B » Sun Sep 09, 2007 8:02 pm

Well welll, it's only me, been away from the forum for a bit cos I've not been able to use me computer.

Anyway, I've moved back down south (shudder), I have a kinda plan for things, but in the mean time I need some cash in my pocket and a driving licence so I've moved in with me mum so that I'm not wasting a shed load on rent. It's only temporary like but for the time being I'm stuck in Guildford . What I wanted to know is where the nearest spots are to here, I'm guessing my only hope for the odd surf is the Isle of White but I haven't really done any research.

Cheers folks. ...J...

P.S. Surferdude_Scarborough, soz for forgettin' to text ya back. How'd yer A-Levels go; is it chemistry or surf science??

Zoomin' straight in there like batman....

From Guildford, you have quite a few spots only an hour or so away. Knowing which one's gonna work is the tricky bit

So, from east... (this is just a few of the obvious ones)...

Brighton/Shoreham - one of the few places on the south coast that gets protection from westerlies. Only works low - mid tide.

Wittering/Bracklesham - beach break, one of the more consistent spots on the south coast. Easily blown out. Strong rips.

Bournemouth - beach break, some protection by the pier but gets very crowded.

"Bournemouth area reefs" - around kimmeridge, several spots that are without doubt the best spots on the south coast when they're working.

Dozens more spots, but those are the easiest to get to/predict etc.

Local knowledge - British Telecom cleverly put a picture of one of the best secret spots on the South Coast going off on the front of the 1991 phone book. Nobody I knew had any idea where it was. Me and a few mates spent months climbing down cliffs when there was a swell running trying to find it. We did in the end.....

Have a look at the surf report on www.sharkbait.co.uk for up to the minute S Coast surf reports for the Brighton/Witterings area.
