Just wax is good but the tail pad help quite a bit for deep duck dives when getting your toes on the end of the board!

Deck grip for me.

One tip when first on a new board is not to wax in front of it first couple of surfs. That way your foot will slide back to its natural position. Getting you and new board in tune together.

most deck grips are similar, but they can be made out of different material, depends if you're surfing in board shorts? sometimes they can really rub, but otherwise i'm not sure it matters too much, but personally i wouldn't buy a really cheap one just incase

Not worth buying a cheap one for the price difference.. what £10 instead of £14???

Also I suggest back foot having the stomp pad if its a shortboard and the front foot having wax.

hmm I don't quite understand what you mean there.

I bought a board today and hoping to go on it tomorrow. Haven't waxed it yet.

Anyway, when you put the wax on do you just rub the wax bar straight onto the board and nothing else?

Do I have to wet my board before I put the wax on?

Also, do I have to do it x minutes before I go in the sea or can you put it on just before you go in?

Don't wet your board first - it is much harder to get the wax on.
X mins - again no. I like to wax it before I go to the beach because I am always keen to get in, sometimes too keen to get a decent wax covering.

Sorry, just to clarify, wax where your front foot should be but leave a gap between the grip and this, then when you pop up your back foot, if too far forward will slip back onto the tail pad.

As its a new board and smaller than what your used to, this should quickly iron out any positioning problems you may have.

Damn, I knew you'd reply whilst I was waxing my board  Not sure it applies to me though as I don't have a deck grip. Anyway, it makes sense when I read your OP now, I wasn't linking the deck grip bit of your post to the rest of it.

I wasn't really sure where my feet would be so I just waxed most of it. Going to test it today and I can always take some of it off if needed.

I thought it was going to be more bumpy than it is though (like more raised). It should provide enough grip though.
