how to take the drop on a steeper wave

Postby Huntingtonsurf80 » Tue Aug 28, 2007 5:02 am

i' m surfing waves fine, but when it comes to larger waves that require me to " drop" down the wave from the lip, before my pop up i tend to drop so fast i get scared and push board from under me and end up body surfing, I pearl, or I slip off the back. When taking a larger drop, I know you angle the board but when you pop up, should you put more pressure on the back of the board but still lean forward to avoid the board from slipping under my feet? I think i'm just hesitating and not just going with the drop. i don't know. help. lol

Speed and practise. You have to get to your feet as quick as you can. Practise your popping on the beach before you go in.

you just need to be confident and not hesitate, this means time and time is important

Sausage said it.. you have to just do it. Try taking the shoulder on larger waves to ease yourself into it. But you do just need to get to your feet and not lean back.. accept the fall and keep your balance centered.

also try going for the wave earlyer so your not popping up on such a steep wave. everytime i take my shortboard into bigger steeper surf i have the same problem the 1st few waves, but i make my stance alittle wider and it tends to help, you just gota ajust your stance back once you have made the drop

 That looks monstrous. I've had this same problem, but I realize that it's the fear that's keeping me from popping up successfully. Its just a matter of getting used to catching these larger waves, getting trashed, and doing it all over again.

Last week though, there was one wave where I was practically vertical. I couldn't pop up right away because I was too shocked and scared.

oh yeah in steep waves it also helps not to put too much pressure on front foot to stop the nose digging in

thanks guys for the advice. I think when I'm catching really steep waves, i'm standing up to soon and going over the falls. I think I need to angle my board more away from the peak to stay in the curl and PADDLE more. I keep repeating this mistake. I need to paddle more. thanks guys. I'll also remember to say "take off" rather than pop up. lol.

I think what i'm doing wrong is i'm popping up quick but I'm taking off on the lip of the wave when it's already breaking. My timing seems off when it comes to steeper waves. How should a steep wave look like when you should start paddling for it? Also, if you paddle to much for a steep wave and not pop up in time, are you just going to get pitched off the lip? When should you stop paddling and pop up?

You could be popping up too far back on the board and stalling it. You should pop up when you feel the wave push you .

i encountered this same issue today in FL. waves were really peaky and steep..really long lines..so it was hard to get position on the shoulder for a shoulder ride. i dunno if it was my board or what but i couldnt seem to catch the wave until it was almost vertical..then i would either go over the falls and eat it hard or panic and pull out. i dont get it. i think it was just bad position. you cannot catch big waves that tend to close out in the middle..you have to be in position near the shoulder..
