You have to have a degree except in particular circumstances or professions. At the moment, they're crying out for plumbers so that'd do. And in some circumstances, particularly IT, work experience can count instead of a degree.

But you need "A Skill".

I saw the list of occupations in demand on that site you linked me to ... if you do one of those can you get in without a degree or is it only the ones they really need like plumbers as you mentioned.

This is where it gets confusing....
There's the points list for occupations (Skilled Occupations List), which gives you the number of points for your job... but then there's the 'Occupations in demand' (I think thats the right list, but I may well be confused...) which is the stuff they really need and will make allowances for. This list is quite short, and is altered regularly.

It depends on the job you do....

Take The Points Test to see if you have any chance.

BUT these tests are by the company that then do all the work for getting you a visa and charge you lots of money, so its in their interest for you to 'get enough points' so its only an indication, and definitely not a guarantee that you could get a visa.

Aont know about Australia, but the 'Agencies' that help you get your NZ visas often do very little and quiet often slow the process down.

Unless you have something way out of the ordinary I wouldnt bother with one.

I think I'd be ok .. I get over 120 without adding any points for the work experience. I'm not qualified yet though and by the time I am I will have the relevant experience.

I'll have to think about it in a few years time. Mind you, things will probably be a bit different then!

Talking about NZ, as an AAT accountant, you would have no worries getting a work to residence visa, which turns into permanent residency, and after 5 years, you can get citizenship, which would allow you to live and work in Australia anyway (although I'm not sure why anybody would want to move from NZ to Oz )

Really? I've done the first year of my AAT (assuming I passed my exam! find out tomorrow I think) so only one year to go. Will have to do some research

I'm pretty sure they have a reciprocal membership arrangement with the UK AAT for technician membership, and that the UK AAT qualification is seen as degree equivalent by NZQA - they assess your qualifications for equivalency in NZ.

So basically, if that's the case, you can claim points for having a degree level qualification, points for relevant work experience, and be on a skills shortage list. You would probably get work visas easily enough, there's been a big drop off in immigration to NZ (probably Oz too) because of exchange rates, dodgy housing market in the US & UK etc, so generally the points requirement gets reduced to increase the amount of people that can get in. In NZ, they have a quota to fill every year, so basically just pick the highest points on applications, and work their way down until they have enough people.

This seems to be the case with Australia. My sister has just finished submitting her visa application through an agency and it has taken twice as long as when I applied with my girlfriend a few years back.
You still have to do all the legwork yourself, they just tell you in detail the information you need.
I definately agree with you RJD, unless you have an unusual circumstance then do it yourself.

my sister and bro-in-law moved out to Chch NZ august last year and they paid an agency, their friends didnt pay an agency and only got out there this june when i was there on my holiday

Usualy peoples situations change the timelines.

If your on the skills shortage lists, and have a job offer you can get visas in a few months at most, if you dont have a job already then NZIS take their time.

Unless you make a big mistake somewhere (unlikely) an agency wont speed things up.

Edit:- we managed our visas in about 5months, ourselves.

I know someone that got PR visas for NZ in ten days, start to finish. He had to pay through the nose to do it, getting private medicals done, paperwork couriered backwards and forwards around the world etc.

As i have an American passport i can move back whenever i want, but there are 2 things kinda stopping/putting the idea on hold for me (well 3 really).... my bro lives over here and he is like my best mate,
my girlfriend wouldn't be able to come with me permanently unless we get married (not likely )

haha, that is where I am going.....well atleast at first. I have a place to stay in a suburb of sydney for free. So I will use that while I can. Then I plan on getting up to Brisbane after the summertime(their summer)
