There's an absolute shed load of people from my job (ambulance service) all going to Oz at the moment, plus a load of nurses.

Unfortunately, I've got family that can't be left behind, so I'm having to wait for a few more years and then move down to the south coast as a 'next best thing' .............

Fly to Brisbane on August 2nd!!! Will be 45mins from some awesome surf - Burleigh Heads, Snapper, Kirra, Sunshine Coast and 2 hrs from the epic points of Noosa to the north and Byron to the south.
63 days to go!!!! Only 30 more shifts to do!
Any Oz summer meet has to be in my neck of the woods - summer is flat season for Sydney but perfect for Qld!!! :D
I don't really mind though - the flight is dirt cheap.
Should find out if I've got a job at the end of June. Got an apartment booked for our first week there.
I think the info about the working holiday visas is incorrect. You have to be on a job sponsored visa to be able to apply for a permanent residency visa. Also, I believe the working holiday visas only allow you to work with the same employer for 3 months.
Yay for Oz - and even bigger YAY for my girlfriend getting us the visas!!!!! :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D

Actually its 6 months. Well atleast that is what I have found. I have only looked under the Canadian section, so not 100%.

I'm not convinced that the visa authority know. Or rather, I suspect they know, but dont want anyone else to know. Its a secret

Getting a straight yes/no answer does not seem to ever be an option. No idea whether thats unique to Oz, or whether thats worldwide.

I can't say if giving ambiguous answers is unique to oz, but I'll confirm that the "no straight answer" response is typical of all government organisations in oz...

I'm trying to put a roll-bar on my car, and I can't find anywhere on our road and traffic authority's website that gives any indication about legal requirements

how u guys all getting on with this then?!

As u prob heard there are to be some rule changes from september 1st, which is great news for me as i can how apply a full year earlier! So could be there before my 26th bday.

I need to:

send off for police report..
get documents certified and sent for skill assessment..
take an english test (!) for bonus points i need (sept 22nd)
Download and fill out the new forms after sept 1st..
wait til november when i have enough work experience..
and then..!
I can send all the docs off and wait for my visa to turn up! YES!

don't post here much i know, but hope to hook up for a surf one day when we all get there..! Manly, Noosa, Byron Bay etc...

until then i will continue to enjoy the flat english east coast in the rain! hah!

how u doing DBBB? Filled out your forms yet??

ha ha ha :bang:

The first stage (where the new job applies to act as a sponsor) is complete, so now its up to me. Filling in those forms, and waiting for that police report to arrive.

To get things rolling quicker, Im doing it slightly differently from my original plans and going for a temporary visa initially and then getting the permanent one once Im over there. Should work out quicker that way. So - fingers crossed - only a matter of weeks now :D

Still aiming for the end of october.

Thinking about where to live at the moment. Thinking around Maroubra. Then I can probably go surfing with the Bra Boys

And then, yeah, lets go for a surf 8)

yeah i know what u mean DBBB, it's all a lot of box-ticking and making sure u have all the up to date info! Absolute mission!

Temporary way sounds good actually, you get something like up to 3 years? Did you go thru an employment agency or apply direct?

I've heard about these companies that take u on as basically a temp who they send out to work, so that they are your legal employer - and for this they take 12.5% of your salary! They're on to a good thing there eh!

ugh must avoid!

Sounds like u have got it sorted though mate, good luck with it, hope it all comes off as planned! October eh! All the work and wait will be worth it..

I'm quite lucky in that i have family there who can sponsor me, so my situation is quite simple - i just need the right amount of work experience, and so long as my skill assessment is positive i don't see any problems - so it's just a waiting game! See you out ther ein about March/April i hope! Could be much longer..

BTW i have surfed maroubra, on a very choppy big day! Nice stretch of beach and didn't encounter any brah boys! In fact it was pretty chilled out all round.

i figure you will want a top surf beach on your doorstep anyway. Maroubra is nice and cheaper than other suburbs in the area i believe, seems a natural choice! I fancy coogee, although it's not much of a surf beach it's just a hop to bondi and maroubra, and has the benefit of being seriously chilled out without being pretentious and without the "locals" mentality either! Also has some huge waves now and then!

heh gotta love following the dream!

i assume u check out domain.com.au as much as i do btw!

check this out:

http://www.domain.com.au/Public/Propert ... id=5363547

Right on the beach in Manly, for £600 a month if u shared - obviously that's fairly pricey, but i have mates in newcastle living in a standard terraced flat for that sort of money, or above an asda in bloody hounslow!

Yeah, I fancied coogee, but in the short term I could do with the rent being a bit cheaper. Maroubra has got rubbish transport links, so is a bit cheaper. And as I cycle EVERYWHERE I'm not so fussed about the train/bus links.

As I sit here working (at home) in london, looking out at the rain, Im beginning to itch with enthusiasm

Yeah, should be two or three years in the first instance, but I'll start sorting the permanent version as soon as Im out there.
I got the job by being fed up on one cold wet wintery day in london and writing a slightly random email, and much to my surprise the question 'can I have a job?' came back with the answer 'yes'.

That was my bluff well and truly called, so I had to do it

it's amazing the way that a simple question can get you places - especially with the aussies! they like you to be direct with them! Well congrats on that one! What field of work are you in?

And i agree, every time i look at a photo, search for a house to rent, or think of the times i've been out back on a gorgeous day, i get pretty damned excited about going back!

Isn't it quite difficult to get permission to live in Oz? I seem to remember there being some requirement on your qualifications or something like that .... I saw a few mentions of x number of years work experience in this thread so I'm guessing that's similar to what I was on about.

Could anyone give me a quick summary of the requirements? :P

No. Its hideously complicated and there isnt a 'quick summary'.
Look here http://www.immi.gov.au/immigration.htm

The oversimplified summary is...

Required profession, a degree, work experience, no criminal record, healthy, under 45 (preferably a lot under 45), speak english.

And a job offer makes it a lot easier.

You have to have a degree? Or is it degree and/or a profession?

Quite a good system they have I suppose!

You have to have a degree except in particular circumstances or professions. At the moment, they're crying out for plumbers so that'd do. And in some circumstances, particularly IT, work experience can count instead of a degree.

But you need "A Skill".
