Postby micho » Mon Aug 20, 2007 1:25 pm

Hey...my board's height is 6'2 inches,,my height is 6'0 inches,,,so ofcourse when balancing my weight on the board,i cant get my toes on the end of the board((my feet is in the water now)).....so,Is there anyway to stand up on this shortboard instead of the basic or usual way??am tryin to stand up by puttin my knees then legs, but the board kinda sinks or i slip..so anyone got another way to stand on the board??thanks..my weight is 60 kilos btw((i float on the board and balance on it easily))

do you own a minimal then? because on most shortboards your feet should be hanging off the end of the board, which means you should be able to pop up in one movement, therefore you wouldn't need to use your knees to get up just your arms and strength. but i dont fully understand what you're saying

no its not a minimal....its a shortboard((nose top,,beginner to intermediate board))...by the usual way i mean the way that is written on the website or surfers usually ride the board,,like the toes have to be at the end of the board...my board is shorter than me,,,so i need a way to stand on it instead of putting my toes on the end of the board..((a pop up without my toes at the end of board)) cause its shorter than me

one of my boards is 6'2, and i'm 5'10-5'11, and my toes hang off the end of my board, the same as if i surf my new 6'6 my toes still hang off the end, but what i'm saying is your toes shouldn't be on the board anyway, you should use your arms only to pop up if possible. on the website it says how to pop up correctly, and if you are riding a shortboard you should be able to pop up like this comfortably, correct? otherwise you will struggle, either by slowing the board down or not getting to your feet at all

if u are surfing a shortboard of anytype even if it is bigger than u your feet will be off the end. it is all in the arms. if u do a search on this forum there are lots of topics on popping up, it should be one smooth movement without your knees hitting the board. by the why how good where u before u moved too a shortboard what can u do

Some of the boards I have my knees almost stick out over the edge. When you pop up you shouldn't use your toes on the end anyways, it should be mostly done by your arms.

I always (I say always, only surfed twice lol) put my toes on the end of the board. I'm sure I was taught that in my lesson. I'm guessing that's just to make learning easier and you're supposed to grow out of it?

Ah that makes sense, thanks :)

I can't imagine popping up without my toes on the end, must be quite a bit more difficult.

thats one bad thing about beginners lessons is they put you into bad habbits to help you stand up easier, but when you get better its hard to lose the habbits, although they do teach some helpful stuff as well

Yup, loads of people surfing on boards about the same size as them. I'm a six footer, and quite big build, and surf a 6'3. Or a 6'6. Any longer and I get confused about where to put my feet

The trick with the arms is to move them backwards before you pop up. Put your hands on the deck almost where your waist is, not at the shoulders, so you push UP, and dont pull yourself forward. So push UP, and swing your legs underneath you.

depends, not unless you can do a popup succesfully, because you're not really gonna manage very well
