Don't wear speedos, aka budgie smugglers, ever. Not ever.

Otherwise, have a look for Doc's pro plugs. I haven't been in the UK for a few years, but Richer Sounds used to sell them. They work great.

Hi,

Do people with a history of gromets always have these problems? my youngest has them though is still a tot so he's not been in the surf yet lol .

I too am learning though its either flat or wind blown chop at the moment so haven't been in for ages...I got a couple of lessons a few months back and that really helped boost my confidence..don't seem to have progresses much but that's probably due to lack of time rather than anything else. My only advice would be to get the pop up right..i'm still dragging my back foot and it bugs me, just haven't worked it out yet!

Just have fun...I find the ability to laugh helps too

Agreed with Hang11, get rid of the bannana hammock right off! Get a pair of Birdwell's!!!

Some folks use surf wax to plug their ears, works well, and is cheap. Just get a small chunk, mold it in your hands and apply.

I dont have gromets but do get ear infections and painful ears after surfing. I recommend 'Ear Putty' which I bought from Ebay, cant hear much once they're in so be sure to keep your eyes open when going for a wave, it's difficult to hear someone shout you off it should you inadvertantly drop in....except when DBB shouted 'SAR NO!!!!' when I was about to drop in on a longboarder at Saunton
Have heard of people using 'blue tac' (other wall tacking substances are available  ) to good affect. Worth using ear plugs anyway, especially in cold water.

Im not sure of the deal with gromets so speak to your Pharmacist but my nurse recommended 'Ear Calm' over the counter of your chemist for when an outer ear infection first starts or fresh lemon juice as the bacteria dont like the acidty and will die off.

Please dont wear Speedo's, no matter what is in/out of fashion there will never be a bigger faux pas than the mans speedo!!

Just be careful when doing the mould for the plug. If its the sort that comes with the little tiny ear plug attached to string that you push way down into the ear, and the fill up the ear with the gooey stuff that then goes hard, which you pull out with the string, to get a blank to make the actual ear plugs from.
I had this done for a set of in-ear music monitors for stage use with my band, and the guy that did it said he always knots the string as he had one snap once and the guy was left with all this goo going hard in his ear that they couldn't get out. Nasty.

Another way to keep water out of your ears is to wear a surf helmet.
As well as protecting your head they keep your body temperature warmer in winter.

Diy ear plugs , mould in the ear type and let set have been great , would reccomend.

Another quicky ? Feeling more confident now and have tried a few times to walk down the board , which seems to be fine apart from the fact that the nose sinks and then fall off , what am i doing wrong , i know the board is fine and am keen to progress. Any help ?

Many thanks

P.S Looking forward to some decent cold horible days so bring on the swell , north devon has been terrible for a few weeks now and could do with some decent surf !

Looking for some type of head gear for our winter any reccomendations on that too ?

Your trying to Nose ride? Remember you'll need some weight on the back of the board if you want to noseride, so after surfing the wave, when the white water is at your tail then try and walk the board.

Noseriding is all about having enough speed to allow your board to plane on the surface of the wave. If you ain't going fast enough, you'll never make it to the nose. You've got to be on the green part of the wave, generally a bit more toward the inside than the outside, right where the wave has a tendency to steepen and get a bit more hollow. Good luck!

Cheers all , had another go on some small but clean surf on Saturday and have decided that may be im trying to run before I can walk .

Continued with surfing along the wave and trying to improve my turning , which needs improving , trying to dodge the odd few still riding straight into shore and a few swimmers near the end of my surf. Damn missed them all ! This time anyway !

Will have another go walking about when Im in a bit more control , after all there are only so many times the bottom of the sea looks interesting ?

Cheers all .
