I think the best exercise for getting in shape is surfing. I enjoy it so much I just don't wanna get out. and as DBBB says, you have to enjoy any exercise or it's just no fun and you wont stick at it.

I've done so many different exercise schedules I wont bore you with the details. Out of all of them surfing for the last five months twice a day has given me the most fun, the best body, and the best results. And I still pack in the calories by drinking too much.............

Surf surf surf and more surf...........thats all I wanna do.

I agree that surfing is the best exersize, as its sooo much fun! good for the body (burns calories, tones the body, etc). When you enjoy exersize, you're more likely to stick with it for longer

The best way i find to lose weight is work with a partner, helps to motivate you. obviously most people are different, and have different fitness...so its best to try and get someone with similar fitness and health as you.

I also wanted to put on weight as i'm a rugby player, when i was 15 i weighed 9 stone, and i was 5'8. now i'm 16 (this is only back in April now, around 4 months ago) and now i way 12 stone and am 5'10. this is mostly because I've been to the gym and filled out a lot, but i still eat healthy and do a lot of exersize, at least 5 times weekly, doing various things, running, cycling, going to the gym, SURFING, etc. It also helps not having the right to drive (not for surfing purposes) but this means i have to cycle, walk or run to get where i want to be (its also good after a good p*** up because you burn off some of the beer you've drank, and i know i'm to young to drink, buh who cares, everyone does)

My surfing has improved loads since i've put on weight, because my strength has improved a lot which allows me to put more power into turns and pumping the board...

At the end of the day, if you do sport, when you put on a bit of weight or fat, it will soon be lost or turned to muscle (usually)

Diet plays a big part in weight loss or gaining weight. I personally couldn't eat 6 small meals a day (healthily) because time. But eating 3 big healthy meals will still make a big difference to eating 3 unhealthy meals.

The other thing is that you may not need to lose weight, just tone the body, which is easier than losing weight.

oh yea one more thing!

your body normally changes fitness and weight to suit the exersizes you normally do. so when you start a new sport you might gain or lose weight which will help in that sport (normally due to the training and exersize)

have to clear up one point(again), muscle will never turn to fat, and fat will never turn to muscle. They are different tissue types.

Muscle will waste away if not used.

Fat will go on around the belly and love handles if energy expended each day does not exceed the calories consumed.

Go out and buy a stand up paddle board. You stand up all the time, it works your arms, legs and core lower body muscles. It improves your balance and co-ordination.

Best of all you can get out on the water to do it and you don't need to be in a sweaty gym and its an excercise that is part of surfing, not something else.

You need to be really careful with your calorie intake - try this website: http://www.weightlossresources.co.uk
You need to add details of everything you eat (which often means weighing food) and it then calculates how many calories you are eating. It will also tell you how many calories you should be eating so you know what your target it. You then need to stick within the target for calorie intake.

What dance exercise videos do you recommend for a person trying to lose weight? I've seen that dance exercise video infomercial on TV where they teach Latin American dancing in a workout. Do you know if there's any with different styles besides that? I guess I'm looking for one that teaches more of an American style. Do you have any suggestions? Thanks in advance for your answers.

I think that The best way to loose weight safely is to just cut out fatty foods, and things you dont REALLY need such a crisps, chocolates etc.
I lost 5 lbs in one week eating cerial for breakfast with semi or skimmed milk…cerial such a weetabix (as this helps digestion) with fruit such a grapes (not bananna as this is hig in carbs)…for lunch, brown break with sliced white meat or ham woth plenty of salad and water to drink with some fruit.
then for dinner, steamed fish/chicked with salad or veg..try and cut out big amounts of potato, but if you do have potatio have a jacket spud.
no sauces such as mayonnaise etc…
drink plenty of water..and dont snack of crips & choccie….snack on fruit, rice crackers or low fat yoghurt. that was 5 lbs on one week, without excersie! imagine how much more i could have lost in that week with some gentle excersice!!!!!

SurferFreak15 wrote:Hey. I need to lose some weight for surfing. I just want some tips on losing weight on how much to excersise.

I am 6ft and I weigh near 195lbs my goal is 165lbs. I lift weights and all also. Can some give me some tips on like how many of each excersise i should do. And also maybe some streches and all.

Well, you have to exercise and have a proper balance diet. If you really want to lose weights you should have the determination to do it. Jogging and walking are good exercise every morning aside from surfing. Be a member of a gym and use the different fitness tools. Avoid eating too much foods which contain a lot of cholesterol.

Get a SUP...paddle on the flat days...surf the tiny days...and be in ripping good shape and surf ready for the good days!!
I have shed 45 lbs in a year, just suping on the tiny days.....which happen to be more plentiful than the good ones!!

All this discussion on different ways to lose weight is intriguing...but I wanna bring something up the 155lb guys said. A lot of media images bombard us of super cut bodies with abs just bulging out at you and so some people think that this is what athletes look like. These ponce models would drop dead after an hour of fighting ocean currents on a head high day. If your goal is to surf then look at what pro surfers (that have been around the block....Kelly, Taj, Mick, Bruce) look like....for instance Kelly weighs 165 lbs. but he is a full 3 inches shorter than the OP...your target weight should be more like 180-190(depending on width, bone density etc) to be a peak athlete unless you want to be an endurance runner or cyclist (who have almost no upper body mass when compared to other athletes). Muscle weighs more than fat...if you are strong and fit and six feet tall and a good surfer I don't think you want to weigh 165 lbs...175 would be the very lowest I would think you would want to go, when i've been down that low after extended travelling in the 3rd world it's mainly due to poor diet, excessive illness, etc. and i definitely didn't surf any better.

Also, a lot of people think that lower weight = better surfing, most of that is because there is pressure to ride to small of a board, heres a tip...if you are a decent surfer wanting to push it above the lip and deep in the barrel...find the pro surfer with your same height and weight and ride what he rides(for me it was Luke Egan years ago at 6'0 195 pounds)...I ride a 6'3 by 18.5 by 2.3 just like Egan did, and thats for good waves, if it's shite, you need to shorten and widen it to plane over the crap sections. I'm on my weight to Nicaragua at 195lbs, and if I had my ideal weight I'd be 190...but not really any lower, I have broad shoulders and heavy bones...but my point is there have been plenty of 6'0 surfers well over 180 pounds who rip. Hawaiins prefer to carry a little more weight so those massive foamballs can't blow them off their boards....if you wanna surf like a lightfoot then by all means, cycle 100kms a week, swim a mile a day, eat only protein, and trim way down below where your ideal 'medical' weight should be...but if you wanns surf hard in pumping surf, lay down huge fn turns, and stand firm in the bazza, then don't be afraid to look like a man...strong.
