lol! I see your point!

Do you think it's a case of 'the grass is always greener' or do you think you'd be happy somewhere 'cooler' i.e you'd stay there?

I lived in Spain for a year(ish) and the heat there didn't bother me, I quite liked it even when it was 35 degrees in the shade. (I wasn't mainland)

I reckon it's definitely a case of the grass is always greener. Everywhere has its positives and negatives. The trick is finding somewhere that suits you, where the positives for you outweigh the negatives. I also think that a lot of it depends on the person, some people can deal with the negatives better than others. If there was one place in the world that was perfect, and ticked all the boxes, then it would be packed, and wouldn't be perfect any more.

The term "whinging pom", often used in NZ, is about right for a fair few brits I've met here. They move to NZ expecting it to be like the UK, but with better weather, cheaper houses, and for them to be way better off.

Which isn't true, the weather sucks sometimes, houses are expensive, wages are crap, and it's a completely different country and society. It would have to be up the top of anyone's list if they were minted, and didn't need to work though.

But there's good waves, bugger all people, great snowboarding, awesome fishing, amazing outdoors lifestyle etc etc, so I love it, and really couldn't give a stuff about the negative things.

the grass is always greener. i think i would stay on the mainland. i want to go snowboarding right now, but after a few years i think i will get tired of the extreme cold winters and move someplace more moderate like portland or seatle when i want to settle down and get a real job.

kids from hawaii move to large cities on the west coast a lot. everyone wants to leave where they grow up espetually when its a small isolated island, and the west coast is a lot like hawaii with lots of asians and more relaxed attitudes than the rest of U.S. i have more friends in portland than i do in hawaii, and ive never been to portland. its sad, i missed the migration.

how much luck would i have moving to NZ with a degree in psychology and a bit of experience working with kids with autism??

they get paid ok but its hard to get into the buisness and expensive schooling and licencing.

i met a retired pro surfer who said it took him 7 years to get is surf school licence because eddie aikaus brother i forget his name was on some licencing committee and it sounded like theyre all just so stuck up.

if thats the case, maybe get your licence there then use it to get a work visa in america?

?????

Hawaii:

Both my father and my sister are qualified dive instructors although neither of them do if for a living, and I can get the TA to pay to train and qualify me (PADI)

What are the wages like for Dive instructors in Hawaii? Any idea? I tried researching it on the net and all the job adds say "salary unspecified"
