It's blatently not a Great White, the fins are totally different. At one point in the footage on the footage at http://www.thesun.co.uk/article/0,,2-2007350477,00.html , you see one jump out and it looks more like a Dolphin if anything

great white

Postby shell27gobby » Fri Aug 03, 2007 8:01 pm

okay maybe it is or maybe it isnt a great white but leave these beautiful animals alone. i love sharks espically great whites and one day i hope to go and swim with them well in the metal cage.
ive seen the footage it looks like a great white and the great white is the only shark know to lift its head and body above the water it can leapt out of the water at great speed to attack it prey i watched a film about this bloke who swims right next to great whites and they did not attack him they even let him stoke them and swim with him while holiding onto there fins. people have watched to many jaws films yes thy can kill but 9 times out of ten it is mistaken identy these animals are beautiful and should be left alone they are protected by the law it is illegal to kill a great white soon there will be none left they have just as much right to be here as we do.
maybe it is a hoax maybe it isnt they like warmer waters and to all these fisherman that said we will catch it leave it be it will go back to where it came from but if it is a great white they said on t.v they think it is a female well if it is then there will be a male somewhere nearby as usually the male is never far behind.
let cornwall have there fun i hope it is a great white it will save me having to travel to austrlia again to see another one.

Mad

There's loads of them where I live. Never makes the news unless something impressive happens. A few years ago a fisherman caught a dying one in his nets just off Raglan, it had a 1.2m bite radius, and they had to move the thing on a scaffolding truck, it was huge. He boiled the head, and sold the jaw bone for US $20k to a collector. A couple of summers ago, Akaroa harbour had warning signs up that a 5 metre one was cruising around, and swimming was a bad idea. People didn't swim, and there was one small article in the local paper about it.

It's amazing how the Sun can make such a big deal out of something like that. The chances of getting bitten are so small. Just leave the poor thing alone to do what it does. It'll piss off soon enough anyway with all the poluted seawater and lack of food because of overfishing.

1 - Bullsh*t. From Wikipedia, "The porbeagle is among the fastest sharks. It can jump fully out of the water, a behavior observed in only a few sharks".

2 - Bullsh*t. No they don't as they are homeothermic meaning they can raise their temp higher than the surrounding water so they can go in much colder water and in fact Great Whites are usually found in colder water areas like California, southern OZ and southern South Africa. They are not typically found in warmer water areas such as the Carribean, Indonesia, Indian Ocean etc.

3 - Try South Africa as its much nearer  .
