Speed and cutbacks...?

Postby Rizzzer » Wed Sep 22, 2004 10:41 am

hey there, just looking for some advice on getting up speed and getting cutbacks down. ive been trying to do hard cutbacks and i seem to lose my balance because my board doesnt stay beneath my center of gravity. i find sometimes that i jsut cant cut hard because i dont have enough speed up so the times when i dont lose my balance my turns are just loose and slow.. im riding a 6'6 and waves between 1-4ft.

if i have a shorter board will this be easier? i am thinking of my next board being a shorter 6'0 - 6-3 possible a swallow tail fish. o im 5'10 180 (82kg)

thanks for the help

Hm, well it might be to do with your technique, but im thinking the waves arent powerful enough for you to do these hard cutbacks you see the pro's doing so easily.
Sorry about the lack of advice right here. :)

A shorter board will help you, and your techneque could be wrong, and the waves could be too powerless.
I still have trouble doing them, although on my new board, a 6'1 prostyle i can do the easier. (I too am in 1-4 foot waves)
I would suggest getting a 6'2 squash tail. or 6'. Then buy 'surfing techneques with tim curran' They teach you how to do that stuff... im getting it this nov.

Rizzer, to start with forget about trying to do a hard cutty, just worry about getting some speed up. You are never gonna do a hard cutty without going fast enough.
After you have mastered getting speed up next you have to sort out the bottom turn. You have to keep the speed all through the bottom turn so you still have the power to smash the lip/top of wave.
You didn't say what tail is on your board or how big you are. If your board has a squash tail and you weigh 15 stone then you probably don't need a smaller board.

Cheers,

Broosta.
