Question about California, what do you think?

Postby Magdalenka » Thu Aug 02, 2007 11:05 pm

Hi
What do you guys like about California? Thinking about a possible move there.
I've been there once, though it was only for a few hours!
But I'm coming back this time for a few days in September possibly to San Diego.

Anyways, just wanted a locals point of view about California instead of the usual tourist.
Yes, I know it is a big place but what do you like about where you are?
In your opinion what is the best place to live? Definitely looking somewhere near the coast. Near the Ocean.

Thanks! any info would be great!

Near the ocean is good, but cost of living can be quite prohibitive. One great thing a lot of people think about CA is that you can be two hours from both beach and mountains (if you like to ski). San Diego has a mild climate year-round, but is not best known for surfing. For that you must head north Huntington Beach is known for consistant waves , just had the US open last week. Big waves are even further up the coast, towards San Jose--Maverics, but I think that only really goes off in the winter.
Oh, yeah, there are crazy people anywhere you go in CA. There are plenty of surf shops, many just steps away from the local piers. Local farmer's markets are always good, they even have one right across from the Huntington beach pier on a weekly basis, until October at least.
I live in "Disney" zone, but am only about 11 miles from the beach (30 min-1hr from Huntington, depending on traffic). As you go further inland the housing prices drop.

Just joking around. We are in the summertime doldrums on the east coast. I just thought if you adopted me I could do a lot of surfing when you moved to California. Hey even a better idea. If you want I can go scout the place out. I just need room and board. I figure after a couple of months I can find the best place for you. :)

If I had the choice I would move to Santa Cruz, the water maybe cooler, but the surf is fantastic and it is easy to move up or down the coast to find quiet, even empty line ups. I have family in OC and although Huntingdon has a wave and a good scene, I prefer the north !

Theres so many great places in san diego and numerous surf breaks fairly close to eachother so if you have transport you can go where its best.
