hi, im going up to snapper rocks/gold coast for 2 weeks. will i be able to surf well at the end of these 2 weeks. i wil surf everday for about 3 or 4 hours. give or take. i will also have 5 lessons. how good will i be at the end. and what board should i use, (this will be my first board i will buy) will i be able to surf a short board at the end of this time. Are you learning how to surf? Bad idea at Snappers. The locals are crazy and it gets pretty tense out there. Try curumbin alley or D'bah. You will need a minimal to start learning and I am pretty sure (unless you're some god) that by the end you still wouldn't be able to progress to a shortboard. It takes a lot of time and practice.

Well pretty much the whole gold coast is littered with surf shops. It's physically impossible to miss them. So, I would suggest going into one and asking what a beginner would need and I'm sure they'd point you out a board or somewhere where you could get one.

Tomg, you certainly are calling the big name G.C spots.

Burleigh, Snapper & D-bah are not the best places to paddle out as a newbie.

Im not local but have been to all three and the mere whiff of a half decent wave will see a 1000 guys out, 99% of whom will rip in there own right and even then most will still struggle to get a wave to themselves.

If you are first timer or there abouts, fall into the first surf shop you stub your toe against, and ask about some lessons. You will have a blast, learn the ropes and the instructors should be able to point you in the right direction for a user friendly learners wave. Enjoy.

Try Rainbow or Greenmount and have a word with the life guards for tips on best places to paddle out - I found them very helpful

Good on ya for having a go, especially there. BUT, beware. Paddling out in big surf as someone that's never been on a board before, at a spot like that means two things could possibly happen.
1. You'll scare yourself at just how powerful the surf is, and how much effort it takes to hold on to a board big enough for a begginer.
2. You are gonna get in peoples way because it's gonna be busy, and you'll be struggling to control your board.

Don't let me put you off, just be prepared for how powerful the surf can be, even the white water, and how easy it is to get in others way.
