I'm fairly new to surfing and i've been useing and learning on a longboard but i was wondering how long i should use a longboard before i make a switch to a short board?

theres no time frame.

When you feel ready then thats the time to downsize. Otherwise you will just get frustrated.

Have you got any boards you can borrow to try? The paddling/surfing experience will be very different from what I understand.

As Sar said, the whole experience is very different.

There's no sure rule, and the only way you'll know if you're ready for a shortboard is to try one.

Oh, and don't try a really short one.
