In my case...I just want to do my youth work full time. Its gonna be hard - 2 jobs and a degree and outdoor ed training..at the same time  ...Im trying not to think about the work thats ahead of me at the moment. But its definately going to be worth it, hopefully in three years time I'll have paid off what I need to, will be fully qualified and will have the days free to surf and the evenings will be spent doing a job I love. Thats the plan anyway

I'm working on it. Quit a lucrative career in real estae after 16 years, took on a full time job, working only 5 days, 12:30pm until 9:00pm, lets me surf in the a.m. Trying to convince the wife to sell the house and move to Baja. Screw society, screw work, screw it all but surfing and family.

I'm new here but this thread has struck a nerve

Trying as well to escape the clutches of The Man and spend more time on the water

Starting to think that being self employed, maybe some kind of web biz, is the way to go

I wouldn't really know much about this as I do my job because I want to and can't do it elsewhere. However if you just view a job as 'a way to get money' I've heard alot about this guy/book - http://www.fourhourworkweek.com/ gets some mixed reviews on amazon url here

However it probably has some interesting ideas on how to leave the rat race. Not read it myself...

tomato, sounds like a bunch of BS to me, if you want to be rich, write about a 2hour workweek, live anywhere you want and join the elite

This could be a bit more helpful - only had a quick look, but there's a few bits of useful info on there about how to work from anywhere

I agree a 4 hour week is probably BS, but there might be some ideas in there that help.

Technology is changing how jobs are done.

A friend of mine met a surf photographer in Bali who had a digital camera with a telephoto. He'd photograph surfers surfing then when they came in he'd sell them photos of themselves (also had a laptop and a printer). Not sure how much he made but if surfing is a prioirity then it probably would mean he gets to stay out there longer than just using savings.
