HELP - HOW DO WE GET TO MOROCCO?

Postby Annie Summerhayes » Thu Sep 16, 2004 10:10 am

Hiya. I'm going to Morocco in November but am having problems finding a route into Morocco. Ferries from Gibraltar only go once a week, FRS (the ferry company) say that ferries don't go from Algeciras in November so the only place is Tarifa (about 35k from Gibraltar). There are 5 of us all with surfboards. Taxis in Gibraltar will strap surfboards on the car but apparently their not allowed to go over the border into spain! Car hire companies won't let us take a car into Morocco (insurance) and we've tried to hire a car from Gibraltar and drop it off at the port of Tarifa but they're not having any of that. I'm not sure about buses but having paid loads of money carting my surfboard around on buses in Spain and Portugal last year I reckon it's probably a no no. Loads of surfers must go to Morocco in November because of the waves. Has anyone got any tips?

How about flying to Agadir and hiring a car from the airport to get you to the surf. There is classic surf a little further north up the coast from Agadir. I should think flights are pretty resonable in November - not so sure about the car hire.

Thank you. The plot thickens. Just been trying to find flights from Gibraltar to Agadir. No-one seems to operate a service. Did you make that trip? Who did you fly with??

I flew with Monarch on a package hol. I am not sure if you can get a flight only but you can probably get bed and breakfast for less than 300 quid for a week. I do know that BA fly to Casablanca which is another option for you.

I've just been travelling around that area. First walk from Gibraltor to La Linea (over the border) and wander around for 20minutes until you find the bus stop (it's worth having a day in gibraltor too as it's kinda cool).

Get a bus from La Linea to Algeciras. It's just down the road. There's loads of ferries from there to Tanger as far as I can tell.

The bus costs not very much at all (€3) and is about 20 mins. Failing that Tarifa is further down the cost. There's space for boards on the bus. A taxi will cost more. Tarifa is not as big as Algeciros, try different ferry companies:

http://www.cemar.it/dest/ferries_morocco.htm lists them all.

It's massive for windsurfing down there so people are used to boards and the like.

then again i went in high season so all my advise may be totally and utterly wrong.

Good luck.

...and if you're going to Gibraltor in Novemeber there should be some surf around anyway, and monkeys.

Cheers for that. All sounds pretty cool. Just another quick question whilst we're on the subject, Did you hire a car out in Morocco. If so, any tips.
