it definately is! Some people have found it a little difficult to get into because you're not really sure what time its set in and stuff. If you can forget that and stop trying to 'place' it its worth it for sure!!

Its a triolgy by Philip Pullman - check it out.

going on how well he done golum in LOTR im sure he could do the familers in dark materials just as well

Sorry, 'cos Peter Jackson would have been awesome, but, it's being directed by a guy called Chris Weitz. Truly worried about this film 'cos they're condensing the trilogy into two films. Rumour has it that a lot of the religious aspects are being toned down or removed to avoid offending anyone.

It's got one hell of a cast though. Check out the IMDB page.

I enjoyed the Harry Potter series (up to 5, haven't been bothered with 6 yet) for light reading. What's with all this fuss though!? I think that most people have read Harry Potter due to the fact that it became popular; people just conform. But because the writing is simple it has got loads of folk who wouldn't normally read reading and hence the hype, there are far better novels out there. That Pullman trilogy was pretty dire in my opinion, I thought the writing was distinctly average, but it is, after all, a children's book.

Anyone else read any other sci-fi/fantasy? Perhaps Robin Hobb, Iain (M) Banks, Allistair Reynolds, Stephen King? (Oh, by the way, I'm a reet geek :P )

bothered? yes yes yes yes yes! i picked up my copy from the library yesterday morning, managed to resist reading it under the desk at work all day, started it when i got home from work and finished it just after 2am this morning!

really enjoyed it, thought it was a good ending to the series, and was most chuffed to discover that 3 of my theories about what would happen in the last book were right!

oh and i also think His Dark Materials is a fantastic series!

Anyone who has enjoyed these might also like the Tales of The Otori trilogy by Lian Hearn (Across The Nightingale Floor, Grass For His Pillow, and Brilliance of The Moon...I was thoroughly addicted!). I also really enjoyed Eragon (haven't seen the film, but will at some point) and the sequel Eldest, and am keenly awaiting the third. I don't see any problem with the fact that all of these were written for children/teens - I think it's really good that there is such a huge range of enjoyable and easily readable books to help get young people into reading. What impressed me most about Eragon and Eldest is that the author was only 15 when he wrote Eragon...some of the ideas and plots are exceptional, and the language too.

Iain M Banks - Legend!

Have you read any of his fiction (non-sci-fi)? It's brilliant, if you haven't already I'd suggest you read the Crow Road and The Wasp Factory. Oh, and they're more enjoyable if you can look at the plots in a comical light, Wasp Factory seems a bit twisted otherwise, but it is really funny if you know it's meant to be. But if you read his sci-fi you probably already know his writing is a bit wry.

I'm afraid I borrowed someones copy of harry potter and read the last 2 chapters  It's nice to know how it all ends, but I should probably read the last two books and figure out what's going on! If I ever get time...

Crow Road and the Wasp Factory are the only Iain Banks I have read, as you say WF is a bit twisted but entertaining.

I love Robert Heinlein's books, I've read 20-odd of them and am always on the lookout for ones's I've not read.

I also thoroughly enjoyed C S Lewis's Cosmic Trilogy (Out of the Silent Planet, Perelandra, and That Hideous Strength)
